The Edmonton Oilers didn’t expect their season to end this way. A first-round exit at the hands of the Anaheim Ducks has not only stunned the fanbase but also kicked off an offseason filled with urgency.
For a team built to contend, standing still isn’t an option, and now, trade speculation is starting to heat up. One name, in particular, is quickly emerging at the center of it all.
$74M Oilers Defenseman Emerges as Early Trade Candidate
Darnell Nurse has become a focal point in early offseason chatter. The veteran defenseman has four years remaining on his eight-year, $74 million deal and carries a no-movement clause, giving him significant control over any potential move.
Still, his performance this past season has drawn criticism.
Nurse finished with 24 points in 82 games and posted a minus-12 rating, numbers that haven’t matched expectations for a player counted on to anchor the blue line. His name had already surfaced ahead of the March trade deadline, but nothing materialized at the time.
Now, after the Oilers’ early playoff exit, those conversations have returned, louder than before.

NHL analyst Allan Mitchell didn’t hold back when discussing the situation, suggesting, “It may be time to move on from Darnell Nurse. His no-movement deal remains intact for another year, but there may be an appetite from both sides to move on.”
There’s logic behind that thinking. Edmonton isn’t just looking to shuffle pieces; they’re trying to fix specific issues. Goaltending is one area expected to be addressed, with names like Filip Gustavsson of the Minnesota Wild being floated as a possible target.
In that kind of scenario, “Nurse might be part of a package for a goalie, or he could be used to acquire a veteran goal-scorer to replace Jack Roslovic. Several wingers, including Roslovic, disappointed during the Anaheim series,” Mitchell added.
Of course, moving Nurse won’t be easy. His no-movement clause runs through the 2026-27 season, meaning any trade would require his approval. On top of that, his contract could force Edmonton to retain salary or sweeten the deal with additional assets.
That’s a tough balancing act for management, but pressure is building.
After the playoff loss, Connor McDavid openly described the team’s performance as “average,” a comment that only intensified the spotlight on high-priced veterans who haven’t delivered in the biggest moments.
The Oilers are heading into one of their most important offseasons in recent memory. Big decisions are looming, and nothing appears to be off the table.
