Martina Navratilova Approves of Emma Raducanu’s Coaching Move As She Targets Rome Return

Martina Navratilova approves of Emma Raducanu linking up with her former coach after previously criticizing her frequent changes.

Emma Raducanu has drawn the attention of Martina Navratilova by making a key career decision as she looks to return to the tour at the Italian Open. The Brit was last seen in action at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells before a viral illness forced her out of the Miami Open. She also pushed back the start of her clay-court season, withdrawing from the events in Linz and Madrid to prioritize making a full recovery.

Martina Navratilova Applauds Emma Raducanu’s Reunion with Her Former Coach

When Raducanu resumed her preparations for the clay swing, she chose to train at the Ferrer Academy in Spain. During her stint there, she reunited with Andrew Richardson, the coach who guided her to her historic US Open triumph in 2021 as an 18-year-old qualifier. Navratilova took note of the development on X and promptly signaled her approval.

“👏👏👏,” she commented.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion’s reaction comes as no surprise, as she recently provided a candid assessment of Raducanu’s coaching decisions, criticizing her for changing coaches frequently. Speaking to Sky Sports after Raducanu’s withdrawal from the Miami Open, Navratilova stressed the importance of committing to a full-time coach, a decision the Brit has been hesitant about since parting ways with Francisco Roig earlier this year.

“You need somebody full-time. You don’t need to have a great coach all the time. Maybe somebody even part-time, which is kind of what she’s got,” Navratilova said.

Navratilova also pointed out that progress takes time, urging Raducanu to be patient instead of expecting immediate results. She asserted that cycling through nine coaches had been the “biggest mistake” of the Brit’s career.

“But you still have to stay consistent and get this person to get to know you, get the history and give them a chance to make a difference. You can’t expect results to come right away — that’s a long process,” she added. “You need to buy into the coach and stay there for a little bit longer. I think that’s the biggest mistake — she’s been through too many people, and then you get so many different ideas, and you don’t quite know which one to stick with.”

Given her opinion, Navratilova may be disappointed to learn that Raducanu reportedly has no plans to continue working with Andrew Richardson during the clay season. Instead, she has arrived at the Italian Open venue and started training for the WTA 1000 event. While at Foro Italico, she also had a heartwarming interaction with Eva Lys and her sister.
