Vick discussed his involvement in the latest episode of the “Set in Stone” video series by Virginia Tech. “I think it’s important,” Vick stated when discussing his involvement. “I think first of all, you know, a coach like Coach Franklin and the entire staff who has a ton of experience can help us see, you know, how we can kind of navigate the college football ranks, where we’re at, and how we can get better.”
Vick’s perspective highlights a sophisticated understanding of the modern game. He recognizes that for Virginia Tech to climb back to the top of the ACC, the alumni must be in lockstep with the coaching staff’s vision.
The core of Vick’s return to the fold isn’t centered on X’s and O’s or recruiting rankings. It is rooted in the “Ut Prosim” (That I May Serve) spirit of Virginia Tech. To Vick, the invitation from Franklin was more than a request; it was a homecoming.
“On the flip side, however we can be of service to the Virginia Tech coaching staff, I think it goes hand in hand,” Vick explained. “Once you come through these doors and you become ingratiated in this program, you know, it’s always going to be family.”
The college football landscape in 2026 is vastly different from the one Vick dominated in 1999. With the transfer portal and the complexities of the expanded playoffs, the pressure on student-athletes is at an all-time high. Vick believes that his presence can help current players navigate these high-stakes waters.
For Vick, the decision to answer Franklin’s call was an easy one.
He added, “It’s great to have a coach like Coach Franklin who reached out to us, asked us to come be a part of what’s being created, what’s being built. I just thought it was something that we had to do. And I’m thankful for the relationship that I have with them.”
As Virginia Tech enters this new era, the “Vick Effect” is already palpable. Recruiting has seen a localized surge, and there is a renewed sense of pride within the locker room.
Franklin is set to benefit from the current state of the ACC. Dabo Swinney’s Clemson has fallen from grace. Mike Norvell’s Florida State doesn’t appear threatening.
