Mirra Andreeva fell one win short of winning her third WTA 1000 trophy at the Madrid Open. She was beaten 6-3, 7-5 by an inspired Marta Kostyuk in Saturday’s final. The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the teenager, as evidenced by her reaction.
After losing the match in straight sets, Andreeva rushed to her seat and bawled her eyes out while burying her face in a towel. She simultaneously received instruction about the trophy presentation from the tournament official, which didn’t sit well with Rennae Stubbs.
Mirra Andreeva Couldn’t Hold Back Tears After Losing Madrid Open Final
Andreeva has produced a rollercoaster 2026 season so far, with two title wins (Adelaide and Linz) but multiple on-court outbursts. After a breakthrough 2025 campaign that saw her lift her first two WTA 1000 trophies in Dubai and Indian Wells, the recently turned 19-year-old has felt the pressure of expectations.
She’s had a commendable start to the clay swing and entered the Madrid Open after winning the tournament in Linz and reaching the semifinal in Stuttgart. At the WTA 1000 event, she beat Panna Udvardy, Dalma Gálfi, Anna Bondár, Leylah Fernandez, and Hailey Baptiste en route to the final.
But after failing to win a single set in the title clash on Saturday, Andreeva burst into tears. She was approached by a WTA official who instructed her about the trophy proceeding while also comforting her. Stubbs, a former World No. 1 in doubles, was displeased by the way the situation was handled.
“The WTA comms person going up to Mirra and trying to tell her stuff about the presentation and blah blah blah while she’s crying in her towel 1 min after she lost! Omg honey, please give her a minute! My god!” she furiously wrote on X.

While thanking her team during her runner-up speech, Andreeva broke down again, admitting that she tried hard to contain her emotions.
“I promised myself I’m not gonna cry. I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m just not gonna look at you (the coaching team) because it’s easier like this. Thanks to my team for always being there for me and supporting me at all times, when it’s easy and when it’s hard. I know it’s sometimes maybe not easy to work with me. But I really appreciate all your support and everything you do for me.”

This was Andreeva’s second loss to Marta Kostyuk this year after her defeat at the Brisbane International. She would now hope to do one better in Rome as the Italian Open nears.
