Ex-NFL LB Predicts Cowboys Trading George Pickens to Super Bowl Contender During the Draft

The Dallas Cowboys could trade franchise-tagged receiver George Pickens during the draft to reset their salary cap situation.

Will he or won’t he? That is the question that many are asking about George Pickens and his status with the Dallas Cowboys.

On the heels of signing a $27.3M fully guaranteed franchise tag, the situation feels anything but settled. The tag bought Dallas time, but it also made one thing clear. This is likely a short-term arrangement, not a long-term commitment. And with the 2026 NFL Draft underway, the clock is ticking louder than ever.

The Cowboys didn’t leave much room for interpretation. By tagging Pickens while signaling that no extension is coming, they have created a scenario in which every outcome is on the table. That includes the possibility of a draft-day trade. What once felt like offseason noise is now starting to look like a real path forward.

George Pickens Stunning Trade Prediction to Ravens

Pickens earned this moment. He finished third among all wide receivers in PFSN’s NFL WR Impact Metrics last season, trailing only Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Puka Nacua. That kind of production changes conversations quickly. It also raises the price tag to a level Dallas may not be willing to meet.

With CeeDee Lamb already locked into a massive deal and a quarterback contract eating up cap space, the math gets tricky. As Cowboys’ executive vice president Stephen Jones has pointed out, paying two receivers at the very top of the market is not realistic. That financial pressure is what has turned this situation from a roster decision into a potential turning point.

That brings us to the boldest prediction yet, and it comes from former linebacker turned analyst Emmanuel Acho.

“I’m assuming George Pickens will be a Baltimore Raven within 24 hours…,” Acho posted on X in response to Pickens signing his franchise tag.

It is the kind of take that instantly grabs attention, especially given the teams involved. If that scenario actually plays out, the reaction would be immediate and intense. Steelers fans would lose their minds. Not only would they see one of their former stars move again, but watching him land with Pittsburgh’s biggest rival would add another layer to the story.

From a football standpoint, the fit is easy to understand. Baltimore has been searching for a true difference-maker at wide receiver, and Pickens checks every box. He can stretch the field, win contested catches, and tilt coverage in a way that opens everything else up.

The timing also lines up. Draft weekend is when deals like this happen. Teams reassess their boards, identify needs, and look for opportunities to strike. If Dallas is serious about moving on, this is the window to do it.

Cowboys Face Draft-Day Decision as Trade Buzz Builds

While Acho’s prediction is aggressive, the broader idea of a trade is not coming out of nowhere. There has been steady chatter that Dallas could flip Pickens for a second-round pick and reset the position immediately.

That would be strong value considering they originally acquired him for a third-rounder. It would also give them flexibility to draft a younger, cheaper option who fits their long-term timeline.

The draft could ultimately force their hand. If a top receiver is on the board when Dallas is picking, the temptation will be real. Adding a cost-controlled player while moving off a pending financial headache is the kind of move teams convince themselves to make in real time.

At the same time, not everyone believes a deal is inevitable. NFL insider Ian Rapoport has suggested that Pickens could simply play out the season on the tag and bet on himself ahead of the 2027 offseason.

That path would keep Dallas competitive in the short term while delaying the bigger decision. But it would not eliminate it.

For now, all eyes are on the draft. Whether it is Baltimore or another contender, the possibility of a move is very real. And if Acho’s prediction hits, it will not just be one of the biggest stories of the weekend. It will reshape multiple franchises overnight.
