‘Be An Absolute Menace’ — Brady Tkachuk Urged to Change Game Plan To Pull Ottawa Senators Out of 0-2 Hole Vs. Carolina

The Ottawa Senators are heading home in a tough spot, and all eyes are now on their captain, Brady Tkachuk.

After a gripping 3-2 double-overtime loss in Game 2, the Senators find themselves down 0-2 in their first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes. While the effort has been there, the results haven’t followed, and the pressure is quickly building ahead of a pivotal Game 3 in Ottawa.

Senators Need More From Brady Tkachuk

Ottawa’s series hasn’t lacked intensity. Game 1 saw Tkachuk set the tone early, dropping the gloves with Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal in the opening moments. But despite the energy, the Senators were shut out 2-0.

Game 2 told a different story, but ended the same way. The Senators pushed back hard, trading chances in a tightly contested battle that stretched deep into double overtime. Tkachuk himself came inches from playing hero, denied on a prime opportunity by Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen. Eventually, Jordan Martinook buried the winner at 13:53 of 2OT, giving Carolina a commanding series lead.

Now, the conversation has turned from effort to execution, particularly when it comes to Tkachuk.

NHL insider Bryan Hayes believes the Senators’ captain needs to tweak his approach if Ottawa is going to claw its way back into the series. While praising Tkachuk’s impact, Hayes suggested that fighting and emotional plays shouldn’t be the focus, at least not early.

“Brady Tkachuk, I want him to be an absolute menace. He is a unicorn in the league, and unicorns have the best effect on the outcome of a game in the playoffs because the whistles are going to go away a little bit more. There’s going to be more scrums, the ice is going to shrink, but I don’t think you can really shrink it when it comes to Brady Tkachuk,” he said.

He remains the heartbeat of this Senators team, but Ottawa needs more than energy; they need influence.

To be fair, this isn’t a one-man issue.

Tim Stützle needs to elevate his game offensively, while goaltender Linus Ullmark has been steady and will need to stay that way. Contributions from players like Drake Batherson, Claude Giroux, and Jake Sanderson could also tilt the balance.

Still, it’s Tkachuk who sets the tone, and right now, the Senators need him to tilt the ice, not just stir it up.

“I’m looking for an Uber-Tkachuk-type game in Game 3. Tons of hits, tons of scrums. Get on the game sheet if you can, and make Carolina leave that building only up 2-1 and thinking, how are we possibly going to stop this guy? Because when he’s on his toes, I don’t think it is possible. That’s what I’m looking for in Brady Tkachuk in Game 3,” Hayes said.

Game 3 represents more than just a must-win; it’s a chance to reset the narrative. For Tkachuk, it’s an opportunity to deliver the kind of all-around performance that defines playoff leaders.
