The 22-year-old’s arrival in Madrid comes just days after her run at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she entered as the second seed. The American star opened her Stuttgart campaign with a straight-sets win over the World No. 21, Liudmila Samsonova, taking the match 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
Her momentum carried into the quarterfinals, but she fell short in a tight three-set battle against the World No. 12, Karolína Muchová, losing 3-6, 7-5, 3-6. With the Stuttgart chapter behind her, attention quickly shifted to Madrid, where the clay-court swing intensifies at one of the tour’s most significant events.
The Madrid Open, scheduled from April 21 to May 3, marks the first WTA 1000 clay event of the season, making it a crucial stop for players building toward Roland Garros. Gauff made her singles debut at the Caja Mágica in 2021 as a 17-year-old, suffering a three-set loss to Karolína Plíšková in the opening round. Over the following years, her progress was incremental; she reached the third round in both 2022 and 2023, though she struggled against players like Simona Halep and Paula Badosa.
By 2024, her consistency improved as she reached the fourth round, but it was 2025 that marked her true breakthrough in the singles draw.
