The New Jersey Devils are heading into a pivotal offseason, and captain Nico Hischier sits at the center of it all. After missing the playoffs and moving on from general manager Tom Fitzgerald, the franchise now faces a delicate contract situation that could shape its direction for years to come.
New Jersey Devils Facing a Tough Reality
Hischier is entering the sixth year of his seven-year, $50.75 million deal and becomes eligible for an extension on July 1. The 27-year-old remains a cornerstone of the Devils’ lineup, producing 66 points in 81 games this season while continuing to anchor the team with his two-way play.
With Fitzgerald no longer in place, the incoming general manager will immediately face a franchise-defining decision. That timeline leaves little opportunity to build a long-term relationship before determining whether Hischier stays or becomes a trade candidate.
NHL insider Chris Johnston believes modern league trends leave the Devils with limited flexibility. Teams are increasingly reluctant to allow captains to enter the final year of their contracts without clarity, creating a de facto “sign or trade” scenario. “Is he open to an extension? What’s it going to cost? Either get that done or you’re trading him,” Johnston said.
“I think it’s what he wants, you know, that all of the leverage is shifted to the player in this circumstance.”
The timing is significant. With the 2026 free-agent class thin at center, Hischier would instantly become one of the most coveted players available. His strong defensive play, leadership, and offensive consistency could push his next contract into the $10-11 million range annually.
“I just think the Hischier decision is much sooner than we think because he’s either signing in New Jersey this summer. Doesn’t have to be on July 1st. Could be July 5th or August 12th or whatever day he wants. But it I think it has to be moving towards a signing or, you know, he’s likely being dealt,” Johnston added.
If negotiations break down, Hischier could emerge as the crown jewel of the trade market. Teams seeking a top-line center would likely line up with aggressive offers. Clubs such as the Boston Bruins or Utah Mammoth could be among those interested, potentially dangling multiple first-round picks and high-end prospects.
For New Jersey, the path forward is becoming clearer, and urgent. Either secure their captain long-term or prepare for a franchise-altering move that could reshape the roster before next season begins.
