‘Shrewd Operator’ — Raiders Warned on What Kirk Cousins Is Actually Saying About Fernando Mendoza

Kirk Cousins’ “best QB plays” stance raises concerns for Raiders as Fernando Mendoza looms, with analyst warning of a brewing QB battle in Vegas.

Kirk Cousins’ arrival in Las Vegas was supposed to bring clarity to the Raiders’ starting QB situation. Instead, it has sparked a fascinating debate about intent, competition, and long-term planning.

With the 2026 NFL Draft fast approaching and the expectation that the Raiders could select a top QB prospect, Cousins’ recent comments have only added intrigue. What seemed like a straightforward “bridge quarterback” scenario is beginning to look far more complicated. Now, questions are being raised about whether the veteran truly sees himself as a temporary solution. And if so, what does that mean for the Raiders’ future?

Skip Bayless Breaks Down Kirk Cousins’ Mindset With the Las Vegas Raiders

Speaking on “The Arena: Gridiron” podcast, Skip Bayless offered a strong interpretation of Cousins’ mindset, framing the veteran as someone who has consistently bet on himself throughout his career.

“Kirk Cousins, to me, is a shrewd operator and always has been,” Bayless said. “He always operates with a chip on his shoulder because he came into the league as a fourth-round pick. He eventually beat out RG III in Washington after RG III got hurt. Then he went to Minnesota, when everybody laughed at them for giving him $84 million guaranteed, and he made three straight Pro Bowls.”

Bayless suggested that Cousins’ recent public comments, where he emphasized that the best player should start, carry a deeper meaning.

“What he’s saying now, to me, is not what the Raiders want to hear, because he’s basically saying the best QB should play,” Bayless added. “But to me, it was a classic humble brag on Kirk’s part, because he knows right now he’s probably better than Mendoza.”

He doubled down on that interpretation, arguing Cousins has no interest in simply mentoring a rookie.

“What he’s really saying is that he doesn’t want to be a bridge QB,” Bayless continued. “I think he resents that, because he made it clear when he signed with the Raiders that he wanted to be a starter, and he couldn’t believe that nobody signed him to be a starting quarterback.”

Those comments came shortly after Cousins himself made his stance clear during a media appearance, stating: “Honestly, I don’t want to start unless I’m the best option… Best players should play.”

Cousins’ 2025 campaign provides context to this debate. According to PFSN’s QB Impact Metrics, he posted a 71.1 QB Impact Score and earned a C- grade, ranking 30th overall, while appearing in 10 games and starting eight.

Across those outings, he completed 166 of 269 passes for 1,721 yards, throwing 10 touchdowns against 5 interceptions, averaging 172.1 passing yards per game. While not elite, those numbers reflect a capable veteran who can still operate an offense efficiently.

For the Raiders, this creates a genuine dilemma, as the expected plan to draft a QB like Fernando Mendoza and let him develop behind Cousins now faces uncertainty. If Cousins performs well early in the season, it becomes difficult to justify taking him off the field.

Conversely, if the rookie progresses quickly, pressure will mount to accelerate the transition. However, Cousins’ mindset suggests he intends to compete, not concede. That competitive edge, while valuable, complicates what should have been a clear developmental timeline.

As the draft approaches, the Raiders must now prepare for multiple outcomes. Whether Cousins holds onto the starting role or a rookie forces his way into the lineup, one thing is certain: This QB situation is certainly going to be a headache.
