The Washington Capitals have received so much attention as Alex Ovechkin nears a major career decision. With his contract expiring and age a factor, there is uncertainty around the veteran’s next step.
While the winger remains productive, teammate Tom Wilson has noted a recent locker room habit that could hint at retirement. This has amplified the conversation toward what comes after this season.
Tom Wilson Flags Alex Ovechkin’s New Habit As Retirement Buzz Builds
Wilson recently shed light on a quiet change surrounding Ovechkin, one that could hint at where the Capitals star is headed next. Speaking to reporter Tarik El-Bashir, Wilson revealed that Ovechkin has been “signing a lot of memorabilia for opposing teams after every game lately,” a detail that has not gone unnoticed within the group.
While it may seem routine on the surface, the timing has added weight given Ovechkin’s contract status and his pending decision this summer.
The 40-year-old captain has made it clear that he will evaluate his future once the season ends, with health and family discussions playing a central role.
When asked about returning despite another strong scoring year, Ovechkin admitted, “I don’t know… It’s just health-wise, you know, talk to my family, obviously with Ted (Leonsis) and CP… If I was 35 or 25, it’s one thing. But when you’re 40, you have to think for the future.”
Wilson, who has spent more than a decade alongside Ovechkin, also spoke about the broader impact of his teammate’s career and what his eventual departure would mean.
“Obviously, no one’s got a crystal ball,” Wilson said, before adding that the league may never see a rivalry like Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby again.
Wilson described their era as two players carrying their teams year after year while producing elite numbers, calling it something that “is never going to be recreated.”
“No one knows what’s happening in the future. But there will never be another rivalry like that; there will never be Ovi and Crosby ever again. It’s just two legends coming in at the same time and going at it for their whole careers.
“And both having such longevity, and both carrying the weight every single season and putting up superstar numbers, same division…That duo has been so good for the game of hockey, and what they’ve done for the game, I don’t think is ever going to be recreated.”
Despite the noise, Ovechkin has not indicated any final decision. He remains under contract through the end of the 2025-26 season and continues to contribute as the Capitals push forward.
