‘Completely Ridiculous’ — NY Islanders’ Mathew Barzal Blasts Insider’s Report on Locker Room’s Issue With Patrick Roy

Mathew Barzal blasts an insider's report about Patrick Roy, defending the New York Islanders' locker room amid a playoff run.

As the New York Islanders fight for a playoff spot amidst a late-season coaching shakeup, Mathew Barzal is hitting back at rumors of internal drama. While the transition from Patrick Roy to Peter DeBoer was meant to spark the roster, a bombshell report claiming the locker room had grown tired of Roy’s coaching style threatened to derail their focus.

Refusing to let the narrative slide, Barzal stepped up to publicly slam the ‘ridiculous’ claims and set the record straight on the team’s relationship with their former coach.

Mathew Barzal Shuts Down Claims of Locker Room Frustration With Patrick Roy

Barzal directly addressed reports suggesting the Islanders’ locker room had grown frustrated with former head coach Patrick Roy, firmly rejecting the claims and defending the team’s environment. The comments came after NHL insider Frank Seravalli claimed players were ‘fed up’ with Roy referencing his Stanley Cup wins.

Barzal dismissed that narrative without hesitation, saying, “That couldn’t be more untrue.” He went further to explain that those stories often had a purpose, adding, “If anything, we love hearing stories about the teams that he was on that won the cups, especially his team in Montreal.”

According to Barzal, those moments served as motivation rather than frustration, especially when Roy discussed underdog runs from his playing career. The Islanders forward made it clear that the group never viewed those stories as repetitive or misplaced.

“He’d always bring up just how they were underdogs all year, and that kind of stuff fueled us,” Barzal said, pushing back on the suggestion of a disconnect between players and coach. He closed his response by calling the report “completely ridiculous,” reinforcing the feeling inside the room.

Team captain Anders Lee took the same stance, explaining that Roy shared those experiences only when they fit the situation. This means the group understood the purpose and timing behind those remarks.

“You always have a pulse of what’s going on and how we’re doing and the whole deal,” Lee said. “Obviously, there’ve been moves and stuff like that. But this year for me, as much as there’s been things to think about — and you’re not going to avoid yourself thinking about it — my focus is to help this team prepare every day, show up in the games, and do what I can to help us win and get into the playoffs, and the rest of it will take care of itself.”

Roy’s dismissal came with only four games left in the regular season, the Islanders were on a four-game losing skid, and their playoff spot was at stake. Despite the timing of the decision, the Islanders remained focused, as shown in their 5-3 win over Toronto.

As the team prepares for its next matchup against Ottawa, the message from inside the locker room remains consistent. Players have chosen accountability over blame, making it clear that speculation from outside does not reflect their reality during a critical stretch of the season.
