Ex-Maple Leafs Forward Outlines Brutal Truth Regarding $60 Million D-Man Morgan Rielly’s Pace in Toronto

Mike Johnson criticizes Morgan Rielly's defensive abilities, raising questions about the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman's future.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering a crucial phase after a disappointing season forced a management reset and closer review of their core group.

Amid that shift, a former forward pointed to a harsh reality facing veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly and the expectations tied to his $60 million deal.

Rielly’s ongoing issues in the defensive zone have raised concerns, as his offensive strength has not translated into dependable two-way play at this stage of his career.

Mike Johnson Questions Morgan Rielly’s Defensive Ceiling for Maple Leafs

Former Leafs forward Mike Johnson did not hold back when discussing Morgan Rielly and his current role with the team. Speaking on TSN, Johnson stressed that expectations around Rielly need to be grounded in reality, especially as Toronto evaluates its roster after a disappointing season.

Johnson pointed to system fit as one factor that could help Rielly, noting that a more puck-dominant approach might allow him to thrive offensively. He explained, “If they had the puck more, if they didn’t have to defend as much, if they play a more rush-based system where he’s good at joining the rush.”

However, Johnson also focused on a larger concern, saying the team must understand the player’s limitations.

He added, “I think the key for Morgan Rielly is really having an accurate assessment of what he actually is. And don’t expect more than you should.”

According to Johnson, Rielly has shown offensive value at different points in his career but has never developed into a reliable two-way defenseman. He said, “He’s never been good defensively… he’s been really good offensively at times, but he’s never really been great defensively.”

That evaluation becomes more important as the player moves deeper into his career, and physical attributes such as foot speed are unlikely to improve.

The Leafs’ defensive struggles this season have only amplified that concern. The team has allowed one of the highest goal totals in the league, exposing gaps in structure and execution. Johnson suggested that even with coaching changes or system tweaks, expecting a major turnaround from Rielly may not be realistic.

He explained that while a better system could raise overall team performance, it would not fundamentally change Rielly’s profile. “I don’t know if I see a return to high-level play or anything remotely like a first-pairing defensive play for him,” he said, adding that the defenseman “sort of is what he is.”

Rielly remains under contract through 2029-30 on an eight-year, $60 million deal that pays him $7.5 million annually on average. For the next two seasons, it has a full no-move clause, which complicates any potential move. Trade speculation has increased following management changes, though moving such a contract will not be simple.

Another insider, Darren Dreger, said on the Barn Burner podcast, “That’s not gonna be an easy contract to move, but I think it happens.”

As Toronto heads into an offseason focused on restructuring, Rielly’s future stands as one of the biggest questions. The organization must decide whether to build around his strengths or explore a different direction entirely.
