Bears Projected To Select 16-TD WR in 2026 NFL Draft After Trading Away DJ Moore

The Chicago Bears are projected to draft a 16-TD wide receiver to support Caleb Williams after trading DJ Moore.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles completely reengineered the wide receiver room this offseason. Sending veteran pass catcher DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills signaled a deliberate youth movement to support franchise quarterback Caleb Williams. The front office now holds extra draft capital to surround Williams with ascending playmakers on rookie contracts.

Why the Chicago Bears Could Target Malachi Fields in the Third Round

A new mock draft connects the Bears to a towering boundary target in the upcoming class. Pro Football Network analyst TJ Randall published a massive seven-round projection that addresses Chicago’s depleted depth chart. Randall slotted former Notre Dame wideout Malachi Fields to the Bears with the 89th overall pick in the third round.

Randall views the 6-foot-4, 218-pound prospect as a physical upgrade on the outside. He pointed out in his mock draft analysis that the selection adds a completely different element to the Chicago passing attack.

“It feels appropriate to repeat a volume two-pick,” Randall wrote. “Malachi Fields isn’t a 1:1 replacement for DJ Moore, but he does still provide added support for quarterback Caleb Williams via a longer, taller body.”

Fields spent four seasons at Virginia before transferring to Notre Dame for his final collegiate campaign in 2025. The big-bodied receiver produced 16 career receiving touchdowns across his five college seasons. He broke out during his junior and senior years for the Cavaliers, logging over 800 receiving yards in back-to-back seasons while fighting through tight coverage in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

His lone year with the Fighting Irish proved he could maintain efficiency in a different offensive scheme. Fields hauled in 36 passes for 630 yards and 5 scores during the 2025 season. That production translated to a staggering 17.5 yards per reception for the Notre Dame offense.

Fields consistently boxed out defenders and operated as a reliable possession option. He then validated his college tape against top-tier competition during the pre-draft evaluation process.

But if Chicago drafts him, he will be expected to fill Moore’s shoes, who finished the 2025 season in 73rd place according to the PFSN’s NFL WR impact.

NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein highlighted the receiver as a major standout during Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Alabama. Zierlein praised his massive frame and catch radius, officially calling him the most physically imposing wideout at the showcase event.

Zierlein also noted on NFL.com: “He’s best suited for an offense that allows him to get from Point A to Point B while using his frame/ball skills to dominate the work space and win in the air.

He can be a slow starter versus press and lives on contested targets, but he moves the chains on tight-window throws and consistently tilts 50/50 balls in his direction outside the numbers. Fields might never be a star, but his traits, playing style, and ball skills should make him a productive WR2 in time.”

The receiver fully embraced the challenge of proving himself against elite cornerbacks. Fields told reporters in Mobile that his primary objective for the week was to dominate the competition.

“Dominate against the best in the country,” Fields said during Senior Bowl week. “We’re all in this spot right here, coming out and competing every day. So, definitely just dominate the competition and just build confidence in myself and within the guys around me.”

Drafting a player like Fields would directly address the red-zone and third-down needs for Williams. Fields wins with raw strength, hand fighting, and elite body positioning rather than sheer vertical speed. That specific skill set contrasts perfectly with the explosive playmakers already established on the Chicago roster.
