Jannik Sinner Downplays No. 1 Battle With Carlos Alcaraz While Chasing Monte-Carlo Title

Jannik Sinner admits he feels "quite free" in Monte-Carlo, choosing to focus on his performances rather than the No. 1 race.

The 2026 Monte-Carlo Masters has set the stage for a compelling race between the world’s top two players, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. The players have kicked off their clay-court season with straight-set wins, and fans are eager to witness the next chapter in their rivalry.

The pair is fighting for more than just the title in Monte-Carlo. Not only is Alcaraz’s title defense at stake, he also faces the risk of losing his World No. 1 ranking. The Spaniard has come to terms with his potential ranking slide, while the Italian is unbothered by the high-reward drama.

Jannik Sinner Is Focusing on His Clay-Court Growth at the Monte-Carlo Masters

Sinner, a Monte-Carlo Masters semifinalist in 2024, has no points to defend at the event this time, courtesy of his absence last year. Alcaraz was not expecting to see his arch-rival at the tournament at all considering his grueling but successful Sunshine Double campaign in March. But Sinner, a resident of Monaco, is reveling in the comfort of his home.

During his conversation with the Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj, he admitted to feeling “slightly more relaxed,” sleeping at home in his own bed. The 24-year-old’s contentment appears to have translated to his on-court results. Sinner advanced to the Round of 16 in Monte-Carlo after winning his first match, 6-3, 6-0, against Ugo Humbert on Tuesday.

“I come here with just feeling quite free. I’ll take whatever the result is,” he told Amritraj.
After 66 weeks as the World No. 1, Sinner was dethroned by Alcaraz at last year’s US Open. The Spaniard has now equaled his rival’s weeks at the top. Whoever leaves the tournament as the World No. 1 begins his 67th week on the throne on Monday.

The Italian is aware of the scenarios that would ensure his reign, but he isn’t too worried about the race. “I don’t want to put myself (under) pressure or anything else. At the end of the day No. 1 is important, but at the same time it is more important for me to improve as a player on this surface.”

Clay is the surface Jannik Sinner has yet to make a mark on. The only clay title he’s won so far is the 2022 Croatia Open, where he staged a comeback victory against Alcaraz. The Italian came tantalizingly close to reigning supreme in Paris last year but was ultimately denied by his arch-rival. He also made the final of the 2025 Italian Open.

With renewed hope and a desire to improve, Sinner aims to succeed this year. “I haven’t won anything yet (on clay), you know, talking about big titles. Last year I was close, but this is a new season, a new year, new feelings. We’ll see how it goes.”

Carlos Alcaraz has entered the clay court season with a similar mindset. He is prioritizing his day-to-day progress on the surface over the World No. 1 race. He, too, has reached the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters after a 6-1, 6-3 win against Sebastian Baez. In his next match, he faces either Terence Atmane or Tomás Martín Etcheverry. Sinner, meanwhile, awaits the winner of Tomáš Macháč vs. Francisco Cerundolo.
