Ex-NHL GM Pokes Holes in Rumors of Maple Leafs Winger Matthew Knies’ Collapsed Deadline Move to Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens made headlines at the trade deadline for what they didn’t do. While many expected general manager Kent Hughes to add a major piece, the team ultimately stood pat.

Hughes later revealed that a potential blockbuster nearly materialized but fell apart, sparking speculation that Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs may have been involved.

Canadiens Trade Buzz Involving Matthew Knies in the Spotlight

Montreal currently sits third in the Atlantic Division with a strong record, is already qualified for the playoffs, and is eyeing a deep run. Given their position, many fans believed the Canadiens would push for reinforcements at the March trade deadline. Instead, management chose not to disrupt a young roster that has developed strong chemistry throughout the season.

Still, Hughes confirmed the team explored at least one significant deal, fueling rumors that Knies was the target. The Canadiens GM declined to provide details but hinted the discussions could be revisited in the offseason, keeping speculation alive.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested Knies was indeed the player Montreal pursued. “In this deal that didn’t quite happen between Toronto and Montreal, which I still do believe was Knies, even though everyone’s denying it, I don’t think (Michael) Hage was in the deal, I think a lot of people suspected he was because Pelley mentioned his name,” Friedman said.

However, former Tampa Bay Lightning GM Brian Lawton offered a different perspective. Responding to Friedman’s comments, Lawton said, “That is interesting. More of a red herring. The holdup in things was centered around ‘center’ being the key word, a different trade that simply did not happen in time!”

Lawton’s take casts doubt on the assumption that Montreal and Toronto were close to finalizing a Knies trade. Instead, he believes the rumor gained traction because it fit the narrative, not because it reflected what actually stalled negotiations.

Knies’ name surfaced largely due to his profile. The young winger brings size, skill, and scoring ability, making him an appealing fit for a Canadiens team loaded with prospects. His potential to make an immediate impact naturally made him a logical target in speculation surrounding a “mystery” deal. Also, his first-year $46.5 million contract status only added to the intrigue.
