The spotlight at Indiana’s April 1 pro day was expected to shine brightest on quarterback Fernando Mendoza, which it did. But there was another Hoosier who stole the show in a big way, whose stock could be trending upward: cornerback D’Angelo Ponds.
D’Angelo Ponds Lights Up Indiana’s Pro Day
Coming into the event as a projected second-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Ponds already carried strong momentum from a standout junior season that helped earn Hoosier Nation their first football national championship in history. That momentum only grew after he delivered an eye-opening 40-yard dash.
According to Indiana beat writer Jared Kelly, Ponds ran an unofficial 4.25 seconds on his first attempt and followed it up with a 4.28 on his second. Posting two sub-4.3 times is rare even among elite defensive backs, and it immediately reinforced his status as one of the fastest and most dynamic players in the class.

At just under 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds, Ponds may be considered undersized by traditional NFL standards, but there comes a point when measurables can’t outweigh the player himself, and the heart of that player is put into his craft.
Rather than being limited to the slot, as many would assume due to his size, he was deployed all over the field and trusted to handle a variety of matchups, never shying away from the opposing team’s best wideout.
His ability to line up against different receiver archetypes and hold his own with minimal issues speaks to both his technique and his competitive nature, his desire to go against the best no matter what. He plays with a physical edge, unafraid to get down and dirty, showcasing his tackling.
Ponds was also a key figure in one of the most dominant defenses in college football. Under head coach Curt Cignetti, the Indiana Hoosiers completed a remarkable turnaround in only two seasons with him at the helm, ending 2025 with the program’s first national championship.
That defense led the nation with a 97.9 PFSN CFB Defensive Impact score and allowed just 10.3 points per game, highlighting just how suffocating the unit was throughout the season.
Player development has quickly become a defining trait of Cignetti’s program, and no player better exemplified that mantra than the cornerback who steadily improved in his time there.
He now sits as a top-25 overall prospect on PFSN’s consensus big board and is ranked as the CB4 in the 2026 class. With elite speed now added to his body of work and a proven track record of production on the field against high-level competition, his draft stock continues to trend upward, which could possibly result in him being a late first-round pick.
Ponds arrived at Indiana’s pro day as a respected prospect, but he left as one of the most intriguing defensive players in the entire draft class, with teams banging the table to make him a part of their franchise. His blazing 40-yard dash may have been the final piece that elevates him beyond his projected range, and for a player who has steadily improved throughout his career, it feels like the natural next step in his rise.
