Will Puka Nacua Be Suspended? A Look at the NFL’s Rules After Rams Superstar Enters Rehab

Puka Nacua enters rehab to protect his NFL eligibility, but a civil lawsuit leaves the Rams in a contract holding pattern.

Puka Nacua checking into a Malibu holistic care facility is the latest twist in a turbulent offseason for the Los Angeles Rams wide receiver. Fans are understandably asking whether the 24-year-old superstar will be suspended for the start of the 2026 season. His voluntary stint in rehab actually protects his playing status, but a looming civil lawsuit paints a far more complicated picture for his immediate NFL future.

How Self-Reporting Protects Puka Nacua Under NFL Rules

The NFL Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse is specifically designed to encourage players to get help before an incident forces the league’s hand. Because Nacua voluntarily entered the facility, he triggered the self-reporting clause, placing him in Stage 1 of the intervention program without facing immediate fines or suspensions. He receives a customized clinical treatment plan and only faces league discipline if he fails to comply with those guidelines or subsequently fails a drug test.

Timing is everything when dealing with the league’s strict rulebook. Nacua’s attorney, Levi McCathern, publicly confirmed that the receiver checked into the facility in early March. That timeline places his proactive decision weeks before Madison Atiabi filed her civil lawsuit on March 25.

Initiating treatment before facing any formal legal or league action allows Nacua to avoid the punitive side of the substance abuse policy altogether. McCathern stated that Nacua will complete the program with plenty of time to participate in organized team activities this spring. As long as the receiver follows the prescribed treatment, his availability for Week 1 is safe from this specific set of rules.

This medical focus provides the Rams with a sense of stability as they map out their offensive plans. Quarterback Matthew Stafford relies heavily on Nacua’s ability to stretch the field and dominate man coverage. Missing early offseason workouts would disrupt that critical timing, but the current schedule suggests Nacua will be back on the grass before training camp begins.

Nacua Controversy Threatens Rams Contract Extension Plans

While the rehab visit shields him from substance-abuse discipline, the NFL Personal Conduct Policy operates under a completely different framework. Atiabi’s lawsuit alleges that Nacua bit her during a New Year’s Eve gathering and made an antisemitic remark. McCathern has vehemently denied the hate speech accusation and characterized the physical contact as mere “horseplay” in his public statements.

The defense recently pointed to TMZ footage showing Nacua seemingly unconscious in the back of a van while others partied around him, labeling it a crucial piece of evidence to discredit the violent assault claims. Even with that defense, the NFL does not need a criminal conviction to levy a suspension. Commissioner Roger Goodell maintains broad authority to discipline players if an independent league investigation determines they engaged in conduct detrimental to the shield.

This situation is uniquely volatile because Nacua has zero margin for error regarding public relations. Just four months ago, he was forced to issue a public apology after performing an antisemitic gesture during a December 2025 livestream with internet personality Adin Ross. The league strongly condemned the behavior at the time, meaning any further missteps could potentially be treated as repeat offenses.

All of this arrives at the worst possible time for Nacua’s financial future. Leading the NFL with 129 catches and 1,715 receiving yards in 2025 set him up for a massive contract extension. With Seattle Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba recently resetting the positional market at $42.15 million annually, Nacua was widely expected to command a historic payday of his own.

General manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay are understandably in a holding pattern regarding any long-term financial commitments. McVay expressed public support for Nacua this week, noting that he trusts the receiver’s heart while emphasizing the immense responsibilities of being a professional athlete. The organization is reportedly treating this entire ordeal as a vital learning opportunity for its young cornerstone.

A formal court hearing for the civil suit is scheduled for April 14 in Los Angeles. The league front office in New York will undoubtedly be monitoring those proceedings to determine if a separate internal investigation is warranted. The Rams will likely be hesitant to make a record-breaking commitment until the legal dust fully settles and they know their All-Pro will be suiting up this fall.

Nacua has recorded 4,191 receiving yards over his first three NFL seasons. He is undeniably one of the most prolific young talents the sport has ever seen. His ability to build on that historic pace now hinges entirely on navigating the NFL’s legal mechanisms and proving he can handle his business off the field.
