‘Ridiculous’ — Ex-NFL MVP Takes Issue With Jets HC Aaron Glenn’s ‘Bluster’ After Putting Geno Smith on Cloud 9

Boomer Esiason criticizes Jets head coach Aaron Glenn for making blustery comments that put excessive pressure on Geno Smith.

Aaron Glenn’s public statements expressing strong support for Geno Smith prompted discussion among analysts, who suggest that the New York Jets’ head coach may have contributed to heightened expectations for the quarterback’s return.

Aaron Glenn Faces Criticism After Heaping Praise on Geno Smith

After publicly stating that Smith is “the guy that’s gonna lead us to the promised land” (setting extremely high expectations for a player who has had inconsistent recent performances), Boomer Esiason did not mince words in criticizing the Jets head coach’s attitude.

Esiason, appearing on WFAN’s “Boomer & Gio” show, drew comparisons and emphasized that this situation, created by Glenn’s statements, heightens pressure. Should results fall short next season, the head coach’s job could become even more challenging.

“If John Harbaugh said Jaxson Dart is the guy to bring us to the promised land, would there be headlines about it and would people make fun of him? John Harbaugh would never say anything like that. That’s the difference. So John Harbaugh has been a head coach in the NFL for 18 years,” said Esiason.

“But it’s how Aaron says it, and this is how Aaron has gotten himself into a little bit of a situation with the fan base and the media, and he’s very confident. He believes that Geno can get it done. And there are a lot of expectations with that part of the coaching staff right now, and rightfully so.

That’s what Frank signed up for. So I wish I could just say to Aaron, you don’t have to be so blustery. You can be confident. You just don’t have to be so in everybody’s face with some of these ridiculous statements.”

Glenn Puts Excessive Pressure on Geno Smith

After years as a Seattle Seahawks backup and winning the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year, Smith again struggled with consistency. As the Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback in 2025, he led the league in interceptions (17).

Meanwhile, Glenn enters his second year as the Jets’ head coach. The team, coming off a 3-14 season, faces heightened scrutiny from an impatient fan base that has not seen playoff action since 2010. As a result, any statement this optimistic inevitably raises doubts.

By referring to the “promised land,” Glenn invited scrutiny, heightening the pressure on his judgment if Smith, who ranks No. 34 in the PFSN QB Impact metric with a D+ grade, does not succeed, as public optimism from leadership often intensifies accountability.

Despite declaring Smith the undisputed starter, the Jets hold the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They could use it to invest in a young quarterback for the future or, alternatively, to surround Smith with young talent for an immediate impact.
