Vikings HC Kevin O’Connell Reveals ‘Honest’ J.J. McCarthy Conversation About Kyler Murray Signing to ‘Elevate’ QBs

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell revealed his honest conversation with J.J. McCarthy regarding Kyler Murray.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is in an awkward position after the team acquired Kyler Murray to bolster the position, and head coach Kevin O’Connell commented on the situation. Vikings fans are understandably expecting a playoff run this year after they watched their former shot-caller, Sam Darnold, win the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. As such, the front office started by reinforcing the quarterback room.

What was the conversation like, telling McCarthy that a new quarterback was coming in?

What Kevin O’Connell Told J.J. McCarthy Before Kyler Murray Joined the Vikings

When a starting quarterback is confronted with the notoriously awkward situation of a challenger entering the team, uncomfortable conversations are required. The scenes at the Vikings this offseason, when they added Murray to compete with McCarthy, were no different.

Coach O’Connell appeared on “NFL on NBC” and was asked about the talk with McCarthy, telling him about Murray’s arrival.

“I was honest with him,” the head coach said. “I said, ‘We are going to elevate the room,’ because we have enough data to show that, 2022, Kirk Cousins plays the majority of that season, we win 13 games — get an opportunity in the postseason. Twenty-twenty-four, Sam Darnold plays every snap but, I believe, two that year, and we win 14 games.”

Competition is arguably the most proven way to maximize player production. Having at least two franchise-caliber quarterbacks compete for the most important position on the roster is bound to extract the best from them.

“When we have a standard and consistency at that position, we’ve won a lot of football games,” O’Connell said. “You couple that with learning, you know, we’re 35-4 when we break even or better on the turnover margin every game. There’s data to show that we should build our team a certain way.”

Murray quickly became a star with the Arizona Cardinals thanks to his dual-threat ability. In his time in the desert, he put up 20,460 passing yards for 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions (79.4 PFSN QB Impact in 2020). He also racked up 532 carries for 3,193 yards and 32 scores.

“In regards to our quarterback room, whether it was bringing in a talented player like Kyler Murray at a really unique time in his career, where I think he’s motivated, he’s experienced, I think he knows where he wants to go with his career,” O’Connell added.

With a quarterback room featuring Murray, a backfield led by Aaron Jones, and a receiving corps starring Justin Jefferson, the Vikings should deliver must-watch football in 2026.
