The Toronto Maple Leafs made a major front-office decision by parting ways with general manager Brad Treliving, a move that follows a disappointing season in which the team is on track to miss the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade.
The change immediately drew reaction from players, including captain John Tavares, who spoke candidly about the situation.
John Tavares Speaks Out on Maple Leafs Firing Brad Treliving
The Maple Leafs currently sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division with a 32-30-13 record, leaving them well outside the wild-card race with only seven games remaining. With postseason hopes fading, the organization opted to make a leadership change.
Treliving joined Toronto in May 2023. During his tenure, the Leafs reached the playoffs in each of his first two seasons but were unable to make a deep run, including a second-round exit against the Florida Panthers last year.
Following a 5-4 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks, Tavares addressed the move and took responsibility on behalf of the players. “A real tough one, because Brad brought us all in here, tremendous belief in us, and we just didn’t deliver. And it falls on us, starting with myself, in just not playing consistent enough and (doing) what we need to do to be a better hockey team,” Tavares said.
He added, “It’s really difficult. It’s still hard to understand the grasp of it all, but mostly we’re extremely disappointed as a team … Brad brought us all in here & had a tremendous belief in this group.”

Several of Treliving’s decisions drew mixed reviews. One of the most scrutinized moves involved star winger Mitch Marner, who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights last offseason. Toronto received Nicolas Roy, a return that many felt did not reflect Marner’s impact.
However, Treliving also recorded notable successes. He secured long-term extensions for franchise cornerstones Auston Matthews and William Nylander, stabilizing the core amid organizational uncertainty. He also strengthened the blue line with the signing of veteran defenseman Chris Tanev, a move that provided leadership and defensive reliability.
Head coach Craig Berube also reflected on the firing, saying, “He gave me a chance here, I feel I let him down. We wanted to build something here. This year we dropped off. We put ourselves in a good spot at the Olympic break, didn’t do enough to put ourselves in a better position.”
For now, the Maple Leafs will look to finish the season on a positive note, with their next matchup coming against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, while the organization begins its search for a new general manager.
