Robert Griffin III Joins Chorus of Analysts Backing Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. As First-Round Lock

Robert Griffin III and Jordan Reid defend Rueben Bain Jr.'s draft stock, praising his NFL potential despite short arms.

Former Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain Jr. has emerged as one of the most polarizing prospects of the 2026 NFL Draft class. After a dominant season in which he helped lead the Canes to the national championship game, Bain’s arm measurement of 30 7/8 inches at the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis last month has sparked significant discussion.

The record for the shortest arm length on a first-round edge rusher in 23 years is held by defensive end Jerome McDougle at 31 3/8 inches, who was selected No. 15 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2003 NFL Draft.

Robert Griffin III Praises Rueben Bain Jr.’s NFL Potential

On Monday, former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III joined the Bain hype train when he posted a picture on X of the defensive lineman working out during the Hurricanes’ Pro Day last week. Griffin predicted that the former Miami star’s talent would translate to the NFL.

“This is what a nightmare to block looks like. Reuben Bain will be a problem in the NFL,” Griffin tweeted.

Last season, Bain was widely considered the best edge rusher in the country, alongside Akheem Mesidor, as the dominant Canes’ defense earned a PFSN College Defense Impact score of 89.9 and was ranked No. 4 in the country in sacks, No. 5 in scoring defense, and No. 11 in total defense.

ESPN Analyst Jordan Reid Defends Rueben Bain’s Draft Stock

During Friday’s segment of the “Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid lauded Bain’s performance during Miami’s Pro Day and dismissed the discourse about his arms being too short for the league.

“The first one is Rueben Bain, the Miami defensive lineman at Miami’s Pro Day, there was a flock of teams,” Reid said. “He only did positional drills, which isn’t a big deal to me, but athletic testing is a big debate in draft rooms. But we’ve seen this dude dominate down the back stretch. He was phenomenal in the College Football Playoff.

“He has short arms, but the way that he was able to go out and dominate the way that he did during the back stretch of the season, personally, I think he’s the best edge rusher in the draft. If I’m the Jets at No. 2, I think it’s a serious consideration. I feel that good about Rueben Bain despite his short arms.”

Last season, Bain earned an impressive PFSN College EDGE Impact score of 82.7 after registering 83 pressures, 9.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and one interception for the Canes. As a result, he won the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and earned consensus All-American honors.
