Emma Navarro Explains Why She Has Withdrawn From Father-Owned Charleston Open

Navarro’s on-court woes in recent months have been hard to overlook. The American, who has a career high ranking of World No. 8, has suffered a significant dip this year, dropping from No. 15 to No. 27. She presently holds a 4-9 win-loss record, with her most recent defeat coming at the WTA 125 in Austin.

Navarro avoided potentially extending her four-match losing streak by withdrawing from the ongoing Miami Open to address her health concerns. She has now pulled out of the upcoming Charleston Open. The WTA 500 event is owned by her billionaire father, Ben Navarro, the founder of Beemok Capital.

In her message, Emma Navarro, a Charleston resident, emphasized her sadness at missing out on her home tournament. “I’m super disappointed to not be playing the Charleston Open this year. This tournament means so much to me, and I never take for granted the opportunity to play at home in front of my family, friends, and the Charleston community, whose support is overwhelming and unconditional.”

The 24-year-old laid bare her issues and the measures she’s been taking to make a successful return to competition. “Unfortunately, I have been dealing with some health struggles over the past year or so that I am continuing to sort out. I am working closely with my doctors and team to feel the best I can, but I just need a bit more time in doing so. I feel optimistic that I’ll be back on court soon in the coming weeks, and I’m already looking forward to competing in Charleston next year!”

Navarro’s father also owns the combined ATP and WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati. Earlier this year, the billionaire announced that the 2026 Charleston Open would offer the participating WTA players a record sum in prize money, with the total pool touching $2.5 million, significantly greater than the prize money on offer at other WTA events.

While Emma Navarro won’t be in action this year, the tournament is expected to host big names such as defending champion Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Belinda Bencic, Madison Keys, and Leylah Fernandez, among others. Paula Badosa, Bianca Andreescu, Sloane Stephens, and Jennifer Brady have been awarded wildcard entries. The main draw action starts March 30.
