DeAndre Hopkins Open to Playing With Kyler Murray in Minnesota

TMZ Sports asked Hopkins for his thoughts about Murray’s decision to sign with the Vikings after getting released by the Cardinals.

“Kyler’s, that’s my boy, man,” Hopkins said. “Kyler is like family. I talked to Kyler throughout the year last year. I talked to Kyler, you know, after his situation in Arizona. So, man, Kyler is like family, man. I would always embrace that journey with him.”

“So, you know, man, whatever I can do, you know, for someone like that, you know,” Hopkins added. “If Kyler needed me, he knows I’m there. If the Vikings need me, they know I’ll be there.”

The veteran receiver also acknowledged the presence of Justin Jefferson in Minnesota. “I think Kyler fits in perfect there, man,” Hopkins added. “I think Kyler is… one of the best, accurate quarterbacks in the game, man, and his stats show that.”

Minnesota lost third receiver Jalen Nailor to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, leaving second-year man Tai Felton as the only proven depth behind Jefferson and Jordan Addison. Hopkins could slot in immediately as a veteran presence who knows Murray’s tendencies and timing.

The 33-year-old receiver’s awareness about Jefferson suggests he understands his role wouldn’t be as a primary target but as a complement to an already dangerous receiving corps.

Hopkins Could Be a Red Zone Weapon for the Vikings’ Super Bowl Push

Hopkins may be 33, but his skill set ages well. He’s never been a burner, as his game relies on contested catches, body control, and precise route-running, tools that don’t disappear overnight. During his peak years with Murray, Hopkins proved particularly dangerous near the goal line.

In 2021, he proved highly effective. scoring 8 touchdowns in just 10 games. Last season in Baltimore, Hopkins averaged 15 yards per catch despite limited usage. He caught 22 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns, both scores coming in the first two weeks before the Ravens seemingly forgot he existed near the end zone.

With Jefferson commanding double coverage and Addison stretching defenses vertically, Hopkins would face single coverage regularly in scoring situations. Murray already knows where to find him. According to PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, here is where Hopkins ranked in the league among receivers during his time in Arizona:

  • 2020: 9th with an impact score of 83.7.
  • 2021: 15th with an impact score of 83.71.
  • 2022: 23rd with an impact score of 68.6.

Spotrac projects Hopkins’ market value at roughly $1.5 million, making him a low-risk addition for a Vikings team operating with limited cap space. Minnesota grabbed Murray for the veteran minimum because Arizona is still paying his $36.8 million in guaranteed money. They could apply the same logic to Hopkins.

The Vikings went 9-8 last season with inconsistent quarterback play. Murray is a two-time Pro Bowler, Jefferson is arguably the best receiver in football, and the defense under Brian Flores remains stout. Add a red zone threat who already has chemistry with the new starting quarterback, and Minnesota’s Super Bowl case gets harder to dismiss.
