Oilers Star Leon Draisaitl Sets Record Straight on Recovery Timeline

Leon Draisaitl shares recovery timeline after injury as Oilers struggle without him, hoping for a playoff return amid a tight race.

The Edmonton Oilers are learning just how difficult life can be without Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers have gone 1-2 without their star forward, including a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday, a stretch that’s highlighted just how hard it is to fill the void he leaves behind.

Now, Draisaitl has finally provided some much-needed clarity on his potential return.

Leon Draisaitl Provides Update on Injury Recovery Timeline

The injury goes back to a heavy collision during last week’s 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Draisaitl was slammed into the boards by Ozzy Wiesblatt near the bench in a play that immediately raised concern.

He did return for a short stretch, which initially made it seem like nothing serious. But that didn’t last. He didn’t come back for the second period, and the situation quickly took a turn. What first looked minor soon became much more significant, with the Oilers eventually ruling him out for the rest of the regular season.

As part of his recovery, Draisaitl headed back to Germany to receive treatment in Munich from renowned sports doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. He has previously worked with elite athletes like Auston Matthews.

Speaking while attending an FC Bayern Munich match, Draisaitl gave a measured but hopeful update: “I hope so. That’s the plan, the reason I’m here right now,” Draisaitl said. “(The recovery) will definitely take a few weeks. That’s for sure. I hope we play long enough so I can help out again at some point.”

It’s not a firm timeline. But it does suggest a potential return during the Stanley Cup Playoffs if recovery goes well.

How the Edmonton Oilers Are Handling Draisaitl’s Absence

There’s no easy way to replace a player like Draisaitl, and the Oilers are feeling that reality right now.

Despite the Oilers sitting near the top of the Pacific Division, their recent struggles and back-to-back losses have tightened the race. With 11 games remaining, every point matters, especially with teams closing the gap.

Captain Connor McDavid acknowledged the challenge but emphasized a team-first mindset: “You don’t fill the void,” McDavid said. “We have lots of guys in here that can lead… We need leaders this time of year and we need our group to be lively and energetic, and that’s with or without him in the lineup.”

For now, Draisaitl’s focus remains entirely on recovery, with hopes of returning when it matters most.

As for the Oilers, they’ll have to navigate the final stretch without one of their biggest stars, starting with an upcoming matchup against the Utah Mammoth.
