AJ Dybantsa Stats and Highlights: How Did the NBA Draft Prospect Perform in No. 6 BYU’s NCAA Tournament Opener?

AJ Dybantsa’s 35 points and 10 rebounds weren't enough to save No. 6 BYU from an upset loss to Texas after a scoreless bench collapse.

March Madness is officially underway, the most exciting time of the year for college basketball fans. It is the stage where the nation’s best young talent shines and where unpredictability and upsets define every round.

One of the brightest stars in college basketball this season has been AJ Dybantsa, the five-star freshman phenom for BYU. After entering college with high expectations, Dybantsa has lived up to the hype and is now widely projected as a potential No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.

BYU Cougars Star AJ Dybantsa Shines in Loss to Texas Longhorns

In BYU’s first-round matchup against the Texas Longhorns in the NCAA Tournament, it was once again the AJ Dybantsa show, for better and for worse, as he delivered a massive performance with 35 points and 10 rebounds.

He recorded a dominant double-double and carried the offensive load, just as he has all season. Despite heavy defensive attention, he consistently found ways to score and impact the game.

While the counting statistics were impressive, Dybantsa’s efficiency told a more complicated story, as he shot 11-for-25 from the field and just 1-for-7 from 3-point range.

It was not his most efficient outing, but context matters; he was clearly pressing to carry BYU in a high-pressure NCAA Tournament setting, with much of the offensive burden falling on his shoulders

The bigger issue for BYU was not Dybantsa but everything around him, as the bench went scoreless and only one other player reached double figures. That lack of production became even more glaring after the loss of Richie Saunders, whose season-ending injury left a major hole in the lineup.

The Longhorns executed a clear strategy: allow Dybantsa to get his numbers but shut down everyone else. It worked to perfection, as Texas pulled off the upset as a No. 11 seed over the No. 6-seeded Cougars.

This game was a clear example of what makes March Madness so unforgiving. Even if a team has one of the best players in the country, basketball remains a team game. One player, no matter how talented, cannot do everything alone, especially in a win-or-go-home environment

Despite the loss, Dybantsa’s performance reinforced his status as an elite prospect. His ability to take over games, handle pressure, and produce at a high level against tough competition will keep him firmly in the conversation as a top-three pick, if not the No. 1 overall selection.

At such a young age, his maturity and leadership stand out as much as his talent. While BYU’s tournament run ended early, Dybantsa’s future is only beginning, and it looks exceptionally bright.
