How Did Alcaraz’s Run Compare to Sinner’s Title Charge at Indian Wells?

Alcaraz arrived in Indian Wells as the man to beat, riding a flawless 16-0 start to the season after completing a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open. The top seed looked in control early, easing past Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-3 before surviving a stern test from Arthur Rinderknech, where he dropped the opening set before storming back 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2.

The Spaniard’s form sharpened in the later rounds as he dispatched 13th seed Casper Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2) in the Round of 16. He followed this with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Cameron Norrie. By the time he reached the semifinals, Alcaraz had extended his winning streak to 16 matches.

However, his run ended in the semifinals, where Daniil Medvedev delivered a high-level performance. Alcaraz dropped the opening set 6-3 and, despite pushing hard in the second, failed to convert two set points before losing 7-6(3), marking his first defeat of the season.

While Alcaraz regrouped, Sinner surged. The Italian opened his Indian Wells campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dalibor Svrcina and followed it up by dismissing Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2. His sternest test in the early rounds came against the rising Brazilian star Fonseca, where Sinner was pushed to two tiebreaks but managed to win 7-6(6), 7-6(4).

He then overwhelmed young American Learner Tien 6-1, 6-2 and dispatched the 4th seed Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

In the final against Medvedev, Sinner took a tight first-set tiebreak 7-6(6). In the second set, Sinner found himself in a deep 0-4 hole in the tiebreak, but he reeled off seven consecutive points to win 7-6(4) and seal the championship. The win narrowed the gap in the rankings between him and Alcaraz, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle for World No. 1 as the tour moves to the Miami Open.
