Carlos Alcaraz and Joāo Fonseca’s ‘Very Interesting’ Miami Open Draw Scenario Gets Verdict From Brad Gilbert

Brad Gilbert believes a potential Carlos Alcaraz vs João Fonseca matchup at the Miami Open 2026 would ve “very interesting.”

Former American player and commentator Brad Gilbert recently pointed out a scenario involving Brazilian youngster João Fonseca and world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz at the 2026 Miami Open. The former world No. 4 speculated on an initial path in the draw for the teenager, which could also include a match against the six-time Grand Slam champion.

Brad Gilbert Points to João Fonseca’s ‘Very Interesting’ Miami Open Path As Potential Carlos Alcaraz Clash Looms

Fonseca has yet to fully showcase his potential in 2026, but the Brazilian remains more than capable of troubling any top player on a good day. His season began with a first-round exit at the Australian Open, followed by second-round defeats at the Argentina Open and the Rio Open. However, he produced a more promising run at the recently concluded BNP Paribas Open, advancing to the fourth round.

Moreover, his fourth-round clash against Jannik Sinner also drew significant attention. The Brazilian pushed the Italian hard before ultimately falling in two tightly contested tie-break sets. With that performance suggesting a return to form, Fonseca could pose a serious challenge to higher-ranked opponents in the matches ahead.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, started his season with a dominant 16-match winning streak. He secured triumphs at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open and, most recently, reached the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open, where he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

The Spaniard will enter the Masters 1000 event in Miami as the top seed and, as a result, has received a direct entry into the second round. If João Fonseca manages to defeat Fábián Marozsán in their opening-round clash, he could set up a blockbuster second-round encounter with the top seed at the Miami Open. What makes the scenario even more intriguing is that it would mark their first-ever meeting on the ATP Tour.

Moreover, former American player and Coco Gauff’s ex-coach, Brad Gilbert, also weighed in on the intriguing potential matchup, sharing his thoughts online.

“very interesting 🤨 if Funseca beats Marozsan 2nd rd vs Escape from Alcaraz
@Tennis,” he wrote on X.

Fonseca certainly made a statement with his spirited performance against Sinner at the BNP Paribas Open, and he will be eager to carry that momentum into a potential clash with Alcaraz.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard will arrive at the Miami Open chasing his second title, having previously lifted the trophy in 2022. Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud in the final to become the youngest men’s singles champion in the tournament’s history at just 18 years old.
