Patrick Mahomes suffered a devastating knee injury for the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2025 season, ending his year early. His availability is now also in question for Week 1 of the upcoming 2026 campaign after having surgery. The franchise recently traded for Justin Fields, which could provide insight into his potential return date.
What Does Justin Fields Trade Mean for Patrick Mahomes’ Injury Return Timeline?
When Mahomes required surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his knee from a brutal injury during the 2025 season, most assumed he would miss a portion of the 2026 NFL season. The Chiefs’ trade to acquire Fields from the New York Jets would seem to support this theory, but Jay Glazer apparently sees things a different way.
“His pain threshold is different, his work ethic is different … I would probably hedge on him being [back] sooner than [the start of the season], by far, because he just attacks things … He’s just different, he heals differently,” Glazer explained.
Glazer went on to describe how Mahomes is well ahead of schedule for a typical recovery from ACL surgery. He detailed that just days after the procedure, he was already at the Chiefs’ training facilities receiving rehab.
His goal is apparently to be ready for the start of the 2026 season, theoretically avoiding missing any games, though this would be extremely optimistic.
While Glazer believes Mahomes will beat the odds, the Chiefs still decided to bring in some insurance for their quarterback room in Fields. This essentially gives them an alternative plan for at least Week 1, and maybe longer, while their superstar works through what could be a lengthy recovery.
Kansas City and its star quarterback are seeking redemption this year after a disastrous season in which they shockingly missed the playoffs. This occurred just one year after their failed attempt to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, when they lost the final game to the Philadelphia Eagles.
This situation could give Mahomes even more motivation to get back onto the football field as quickly as possible, but the Chiefs are also likely to be cautious with him. This is where Fields comes in as insurance, serving as a competent starter if Mahomes misses time to start the season.

Despite his overall struggles with the Jets, Fields finished among the top eight quarterbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings three times in the first eight weeks of the 2025 season.
