In 2025, the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018, marking an impressively fast rebuild. Unfortunately, the Patriots were unable to complete the journey, falling to the Seattle Seahawks 29-13.
Despite their loss in the big game, the AFC champions appear to be back in the mix for years to come, and the addition of Byard further solidifies such a sentiment.
Pelissero was quick to give his input, responding to his own X post saying, “A big addition for the reigning AFC champs.”

The former Chicago Bear may be aging; however, his veteran prowess and capabilities have not yet declined.
Last season with Chicago, the 5’11” safety registered 93 total tackles, seven interceptions, and eight pass defenses in all 17 Bears outings. A season prior, Byard put together his most complete professional campaign, tallying 130 total tackles, an interception, and seven pass defenses.
The former third-round pick not only led the league in interceptions in 2025-26, but in penalties taken as well, registering zero flags all season. Additionally, Byard totaled 73 pass breakups (not including interceptions), tying for first in that category.
Altogether, the 32-year-old finished 22nd overall on PFSN’s Safety Impact metric, scoring a 79.5 impact tally, good for a C+ grade.
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin contributes, describing just how impressive Byard has been across the entirety of his journeyed NFL career. Amongst his accolades, the longtime Tennessee Titan lands second in career interceptions (36) behind Minnesota ballhawk Harrison Smith (39).
Furthermore, Byard continues to display exceptional durability, playing 1,070 snaps in 2025-26. The workhorse has also yet to miss a game since his league entry in 2016.
The Middle Tennessee State product joins a Patriots secondary that hit its stride in the 2026 postseason. Before falling in the Super Bowl, the Patriots’ defense allowed just 26 total points across their three victories over Los Angeles (Chargers), Houston, and Denver.
The acquisition of Byard further excels the Patriots’ threat level in an ever-competitive AFC.
