The top-ranked Duke Blue Devils wanted to enter the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament with a healthy squad. Despite head coach Jon Scheyer’s hopes, that is not happening.
Caleb Foster, the Blue Devils’ starting point guard, has a fractured foot and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Caleb Foster Undergoes Surgery for Fractured Foot, Out Indefinitely
On Tuesday, Scheyer announced in a press conference that Foster has a fractured right foot and underwent surgery on Sunday. The junior will miss the foreseeable future, and Scheyer acknowledged that Duke would have to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament for Foster to return this season.
Jeff Goodman, a basketball analyst and co-founder of Field of 68, reported on X about Foster’s situation.

“Duke starting point guard Caleb Foster has a fractured foot, Jon Scheyer said in a news conference,” Goodman wrote. “Significant hit for the Blue Devils. Foster averaged only 8.5 points and 2.8 assists but was a big-time perimeter defender.”
“Now Cayden Boozer will likely log more minutes as the starting PG,” Goodman continued. “And even without Foster, this is a team that can still win the national title.”

As Goodman notes, Foster provides the Blue Devils with elite perimeter defense. When tournament time arrives and March Madness kicks into high gear, having players who can lock down opponents matters. Foster’s defensive ability has been a cornerstone of Duke’s success this season.
Foster, a junior, has played in 31 games for the Blue Devils this season. In his career, he averages 6.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 43.3% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range.

On Monday, the Blue Devils were once again on top of the Associated Press Top 25 Men’s Basketball Poll. Duke was far and away the No. 1-ranked team ahead of the Arizona Wildcats and Michigan Wolverines.
As tournament time arrives, Duke fans will hope Foster can return at some point during a potential deep run. For now, his focus will be on recovery following surgery.
