Is Arch Manning Injured? All About Texas QB’s Spring Practice Status and Latest Health Update

New details emerge on Texas quarterback Arch Manning's injury status as Steve Sarkisian's Longhorns begin spring practice.

As the Texas Longhorns kicked off their 2026 spring practice on March 9, all eyes were on Arch Manning. Following his first full season as the starter, where he threw for 3,163 yards and 26 touchdowns, the focus has shifted from his pedigree to his physical health.

Arch Manning Takes the Field in Limited Texas Spring Practice

Manning is currently recovering from a minor, preventative foot surgery performed in January to address a lingering issue dating back to 2024. Reporter CJ Vogel pointed out that the Texas QB was at practice. However, he didn’t participate actively. Instead, it was KJ Lacey who received the snaps.

“No passes were attempted as Manning recovers from offseason foot surgery. QB KJ Lacey received the first reps of the spring during the media window,” Vogel wrote.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian has remained a steady hand during the recovery process. Speaking to the media as camp opened, Sarkisian emphasized that the procedure was about long-term durability rather than a response to a new crisis.

“He had a lingering thing that he’d been dealing with over a couple of years that we just wanted to clean up,” Sarkisian noted. “It wasn’t a serious issue at all… we’re going to be cautious to make sure he’s 100% healthy before he goes.”

While Manning is officially out of his walking boot and has resumed throwing, he is expected to be limited during the early stages of spring ball, focusing on routes on air and 7-on-7 drills rather than full-contact team periods.

Manning’s limited availability has accelerated the competition for the backup QB1 spot. With the departure of veteran depth, the primary contenders for the role includes MJ Morris, Lacey and Dia Bell. But if the early spring practice is any indication, Lacey might likely take over the backup QB1 role.

For Texas, Manning’s health is not just a roster concern. It is the linchpin of their 2026 College Football Playoff aspirations. PFSN’s College Football Playoff Meter has Texas 5th in the nation. After a 10-3 campaign in 2025, the Longhorns enter this year as Heisman-caliber contenders. Manning’s ability to build chemistry with elite transfer additions like wide receiver Cam Coleman is vital.

If Manning remains healthy, the Longhorns possess a Top-5 offense capable of navigating the SEC gauntlet. If the foot issue persists, Texas must rely on unproven depth, potentially stalling a championship window that feels wider than ever in Austin.
