Travis Kelce’s days in the NFL appear to be numbered, and with each passing season, the end of the career of one of the greatest tight ends in league history gets closer. Many believed that the loss in Super Bowl LIX could have been his final game, but he returned for the 2025 season and showed he still had something left in the tank.
After a disappointing season that ended without a playoff appearance, his retirement has once again become a major topic of discussion this offseason. Now officially a free agent, even if he decides to keep playing, his future with the Kansas City Chiefs remains uncertain.
Travis Kelce Could Return For 14th NFL Season
The 2025 season certainly did not go as planned for the Chiefs. For the first time during Patrick Mahomes’ era, the franchise missed the AFC playoffs, and to make matters worse, their quarterback suffered a serious knee injury that could impact the start of the team’s 2026 season.
For those who watched Kansas City last year, it was clear the offense lacked speed, explosiveness, and playmaking ability. That reality was reflected in Kelce, a tight end who was once overwhelmingly dominant but is now nearing the end of his career. Even so, Kelce still led the Chiefs in receiving yards with 851.
That production, along with the fact that he still finished among the top five tight ends in receiving yards
, keeps the door open for a return, even as a free agent with the ability to explore the market. At 36 years old, however, the fit he has with Kansas City is difficult to replicate elsewhere, something insider Dianna Russini highlighted.“Based on conversations with several teams, TE Travis Kelce appears motivated to return to play a 14th season. The Chiefs remain very much in the mix to re-sign the three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time All-Pro,” Russini wrote on X.

With the controversies surrounding Rashee Rice and the lack of a true star playmaker, this will be an important offseason for the Chiefs to determine their strategy moving forward. It became clear that the team now needs new offensive playmakers capable of restoring the explosive attack it once had, but completely abandoning a veteran presence could also create problems.
In that sense, Kelce’s return could serve as a stabilizing element within Andy Reid’s scheme. Even without his trademark speed, Kelce remains one of the best in the league at reading defenses, and he is often given the freedom to adjust his route in the middle of the field based on the positioning of defenders.
That chemistry with Mahomes cannot be underestimated and will certainly factor into any decision about his potential return. Kelce finished the season ranked as the No. 12 tight end in PFSN’s TE Impact Metric with a B- grade.
It is not often that a future Hall of Fame tight end reaches the open market, and his next season could very well become a “Last Dance” for this group in Kansas City.
