The NFL’s free agency tampering period opens tomorrow, and the Washington Commanders enter the week as one of the more intriguing teams to watch. With significant cap space, a young quarterback in Jayden Daniels, and an offensive coordinator transition from Kliff Kingsbury to David Blough, the Commanders are positioned to reshape their offense in a meaningful way.
Washington Commanders Emerge as Potential Mike Evans Landing Spot
The Commanders are widely expected to move on from Deebo Samuel after just one season, creating a clear need for a proven, high-volume receiving threat. That vacancy has placed six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans firmly in the conversation as a potential target.
Evans is set to test the market after an injury-plagued 2025 campaign in Tampa Bay. His 2025 PFSN WR Impact score of 72.1 ranked 65th in the league, a noticeable dip from his usual standard. Even so, evaluators still view him as one of the NFL’s most dependable perimeter weapons when healthy, and his size, contested-catch ability, and red zone production make him one of the most coveted receivers available.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, several teams have been monitoring Evans’ situation as the Buccaneers attempt to keep him in Tampa.
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain aggressive in attempting to re-sign Mike Evans. Buffalo would have been an ideal fit for Evans before the D.J. Moore trade occupied some of its available cash. The Commanders could emerge as a sleeper for Evans. Remember, he wants a quarterback and targets. Tampa remains in a good spot with Evans but is not a lock to sign him.”
The Commanders check many of the boxes Fowler outlined. They can offer Evans a featured role, a high target share, and the chance to pair with Daniels, who is expected to be the centerpiece of the franchise’s rebuild.
With Samuel likely departing, Evans would join Terry McLaurin to form a true 1-2 punch that could stabilize the offense and give Blough a reliable foundation in the passing game.
The Commanders also have the financial flexibility to make a competitive offer. Their front office has previously emphasized adding proven veterans who can elevate the offense’s baseline, and Evans fits that profile as well as any player available.
Tampa Bay remains in the mix, but the door is open. If Evans prioritizes opportunity, volume, and a prominent role in a retooled offense, the Commanders have a compelling case. As the tampering period begins, they may be one of the quietest but most realistic contenders for one of the league’s most accomplished receivers.
