Emma Raducanu Divulges the Story Behind Her ‘Ella’ Alter Ego That Helps Her Escape Fame and Enjoy Anonymity

Emma Raducanu shared a playful way she sometimes escapes the pressures of fame while meeting new people away from tennis.

Emma Raducanu has lived much of her young adult life in the public eye since her stunning triumph at the 2021 U.S. Open, yet the British star recently revealed that she sometimes enjoys stepping away from the spotlight by pretending to be someone else entirely.

Speaking after her second-round victory at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Raducanu shared that she occasionally introduces herself as “Ella,” a fictional version of herself that allows her to experience brief moments of anonymity while meeting new people away from tennis.

Emma Raducanu Balancing Fame and Normalcy After Her Grand Slam Breakthrough

Raducanu’s life changed dramatically after she captured the 2021 U.S. Open title as a teenage qualifier, instantly becoming one of the most recognizable faces in the sport. The victory propelled her into global stardom, bringing media attention, sponsorship deals, and heightened scrutiny on and off the court.

With that level of visibility, everyday interactions can often feel different for elite athletes. For Raducanu, however, slipping into a harmless alter ego provides a refreshing way to connect with people without the pressure that sometimes accompanies her fame.

The 25th seed shared the lighthearted anecdote while speaking to reporters at Indian Wells following her 6-1, 6-3 second-round win over Russian qualifier Anastasia Zakharova.

Raducanu explained that she occasionally enjoys creating a small fictional backstory when meeting new people. “Sometimes I love getting to know people and pretending I’m someone completely different and making up a story. It’s quite fun and refreshing,” she said.

She added that her preferred alias is fairly close to her real identity. “I’m Ella quite a lot, which is quite similar (to Emma). I traveled to America to visit my friend on a gap year and I’m working at a summer camp,” she said with a laugh.

How Has Raducanu Fared So Far at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells?

On the court, Raducanu is making her sixth appearance at the WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells. The Brit received a bye into the second round before defeating Zakharova to reach the third round, where she is set to face either Anna Blinkova or sixth seed Amanda Anisimova.

While her singles campaign gathered momentum, the doubles draw brought disappointment. Raducanu teamed up with Elena-Gabriela Ruse, but the pair fell 2-6, 5-7 to the third-seeded duo of Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend in the opening round.
