Naomi Osaka turned heads at the 2026 Indian Wells with her unique fashion statement that quickly grabbed attention.

Naomi Osaka turned heads before a single ball was struck at the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, arriving on court in a striking new look with rugged desert energy. As the four-time Grand Slam champion stepped onto Court 2 for her second-round match against Andorran qualifier Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva on Friday, Mar. 6, Osaka unveiled a bold ensemble inspired by the dystopian aesthetic of Mad Max.

The outfit featured a leopard-print Nike performance dress, a matching track jacket, and footwear.

The Story Behind Naomi Osaka’s Leopard-Print Nike Kit at Indian Wells

Osaka has increasingly embraced fashion as part of her identity on the professional tour. Earlier in the season at the Australian Open, she introduced a softer look that drew comparisons to jellyfish-like silhouettes. For Indian Wells, however, the vision shifted toward something fiercer and more grounded in the desert surroundings of Southern California.

Working closely with her longtime creative director, Marty Harper, Osaka developed a concept that Harper described as “Mad Max return to the desert,” incorporating tribal influences and bold textures. The centerpiece of the kit was a custom Nike dress featuring a dramatic cheetah pattern.

Pictures of Osaka making her entrance on social media showed the former World No. 1 walking onto Court 2 in the full desert-inspired ensemble ahead of her second-round match against Jimenez Kasintseva.

The outfit’s visual storytelling drew directly from fashion history. One key inspiration came from a famous 2009 Harper’s Bazaar photoshoot featuring supermodel Naomi Campbell running alongside a cheetah.

The accessories further amplified the look. Jewelry artist Chris Habana collaborated with Osaka on avant-garde pieces that included custom gold ear cuffs 3D-molded to wrap around her ears. The pieces served a practical function as well, doubling as holders for her earbuds.

The jewelry was complemented by delicate gold adornments that hooked onto her lip and nose, creating a distinctive silhouette as she walked onto the court.

What Message Did Osaka Hope To Convey Through Her Indian Wells Outfit?

Osaka explained the broader message behind the design during an interview with Hard Court. “I want more people like me to be on these courts,” she said. “Tennis has such a long history and tradition, but I think the game keeps growing when new voices, cultures, and perspectives are able to step into it.”

“Style is one way I get to express that. When people see me walk onto the court, I hope they feel a sense of possibility, like there’s room for individuality here, room for different stories.”

She added that the ultimate goal was to inspire the next generation watching from the stands or at home. “If that happens, the look has done what it was meant to do.”

16th seed Osaka advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jimenez Kasintseva. She will now take on either the 18th seed, Iva Jovic, or Camila Osorio.
