As the Alabama Crimson Tide enters its third spring under head coach Kalen DeBoer, the stakes rise as well. With 2025 starter Ty Simpson currently projected as a potential first-round pick, the keys to the Alabama offense are once again up for grabs. It seems the Alabama head coach is in no hurry to name QB1, either.
Kalen DeBoer Stresses Healthy Competition Between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack
DeBoer appeared on the “McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning” show and dissected the QB1 competition heading into the spring. Not only did he mention that last year’s competition was typical, but he also noted that Keelon Russell got “as much opportunity to show what he can do to grow in his first year.” However, he admitted that they threw “a lot at him,” and the freshman QB took it on.

DeBoer said, “We got two amazing young men battle. I’ve used the word ‘healthy competition’ a year ago because a lot of it has to do with the character of the guys in the competition, and that’s certainly the case. Austin and Keelon (are) leading the team together.”
“But not being worried about stepping on each other’s toes. They’re just doing their thing and doing it their own way. Because they are different people. But you can see the care that they have. You can see the leadership qualities that are already coming out at this time of year for them,” DeBoer continued.
Having followed DeBoer from Washington, Austin Mack has spent more than two years absorbing this specific playbook. He stepped in late last season after Simpson suffered a rib injury in the College Football Playoff, showing flashes of NFL-level arm talent that offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has publicly praised.
Russell, meanwhile, is the highest-rated prospect DeBoer has landed at Alabama. After a prolific high school career, he saw limited action in 2025 but has become a fan favorite due to his elite mobility and “it” factor. He could very well lead the offense that PFSN’s CFB Offense Impact ranked 30th in the nation.

It’s a defining moment for DeBoer’s tenure. After an 11-4 campaign in 2025 that ended in a Rose Bowl loss to Indiana, the pressure to return to national title contention is immense. While Mack is the safer pick, Russell represents the explosive dual-threat potential that often defines modern SEC champions.
With A-Day scheduled for April 11, the lights at Bryant-Denny Stadium will provide the first real glimpse into who will lead the Tide into the 2026 season.
