A practice session turned into a spectacle at the BNP Paribas Open as Filipino supporters filled the seats surrounding the court to watch Alexandra Eala prepare for her upcoming matches at Indian Wells. The 20-year-old Filipina star continues to command remarkable attention wherever she appears on the WTA Tour, and the atmosphere around her practice was no different.
Fans gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of Eala sharpening her game before the prestigious WTA 1000Â event, offering a glimpse of the rapidly growing support behind her.
Alexandra Eala’s Surge in Form Fuels Growing Buzz Around the Young Filipina Star
Eala’s surge in popularity has become one of the most intriguing developments in women’s tennis. Although she has not yet broken into the Top 10 or claimed a Grand Slam title, the Filipina teenager has built considerable momentum in recent months. Early in the 2026 season, she climbed to a career-high ranking of world No. 31 after a strong performance at the Dubai Championships.
During that run, she reached the quarterfinals and recorded several upset victories over higher-ranked opponents. The buzz surrounding her results has translated into growing spectator interest, with crowds regularly gathering to watch her play during the season’s opening months.
Even before stepping onto the match court at Indian Wells, Eala has already drawn a strong presence of Filipino supporters around the grounds. A video circulating online highlighted the excitement surrounding one of her practice sessions, with supporters occupying nearly every seat around the court while others stood nearby just to watch her prepare for the tournament.
Why Does Eala Believe Filipino Fans Rally So Strongly Behind Her?
In another video shared by the official BNP Paribas Open account, the young star reflected on why she receives such passionate backing from her compatriots. “I’ve only dreamed of making tennis grow in the Philippines, and now I’m bringing a whole new audience to tennis all around the world,” Eala said.
She added that the support is rooted in a strong national sense of unity. “The Filipinos, we have such a strong sense of community, and I feel like when one of us does well or one of us is succeeding, we all have that shared sense of pride.”
Eala also revealed that the growing interest is visible back home as well. “My friends will tell me that the courts are full. They’re full at home. And just so many things that I didn’t think would happen because of what I’m doing on tour.”
At Indian Wells, which runs from Mar. 1 to 15, Eala entered the singles draw as the No. 31 seed, earning a first-round bye. She is scheduled to face Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in the second round. The teenager is also competing in the doubles event alongside American prospect Iva Jovic. The pair is set to open their campaign against the experienced duo of Jeļena Ostapenko and Hailey Baptiste.
