J.J. McCarthy has failed to live up to being a first-round draft pick across two years with the Minnesota Vikings so far. This has led the franchise to consider other free-agent options, which could directly affect his future. The quarterback received some recent bad news in regards to the developing situation.
J.J. McCarthy’s Future With Vikings Could Be in Jeopardy
The Vikings used a first-round draft pick on McCarthy just two years ago, but they are already rumored to be seeking alternative options during the 2026 NFL offseason. They have reportedly explored the free-agent market for veterans who could be available to them.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was recently asked about this situation and what it could mean for the young quarterback. He explained what he believes the Vikings’ philosophy is and reported on his expectations for their overall plan for the position this year.
“I would be surprised if he gets cut … I think in a perfect world, they would like to bring somebody in … We’ve all been there, it’s kind of like when you get broken up with. When somebody starts seeing other people, it’s pretty clear that it’s probably over … Minnesota knows where this is headed, but they’ll leave a little bit of wiggle room for J.J. to maybe surprise them,” stated Fowler.

Fowler compared this situation to what the Indianapolis Colts did with Anthony Richardson last year.
They brought in Daniel Jones to “compete” for the starting job, rather than outright cutting Richardson. Jones earned the role in training camp, and just one year later, Richardson is expected to be traded.
The Vikings could potentially use a similar approach, according to the NFL insider. This would include them signing or trading for a veteran during the offseason to create a quarterback competition with McCarthy to determine their starter.
Fowler suggested an option like Geno Smith, who could realistically get either a starting or backup role in the Vikings, given their overall situation.
The franchise gambled on McCarthy last year, moving on from Sam Darnold in favor of their first-round draft pick, who missed his entire rookie season with an injury.
He was unimpressive, finishing 37th in PFSN’s Impact Rankings among all quarterbacks, while Darnold went on to win a Super Bowl ring with the Seattle Seahawks. They appear to have backed the wrong option and may now be looking to fix their mistake.
