$212.4M Pro Bowl QB Emerges As ‘Minimal Risk’ Option for Vikings To Address J.J. McCarthy Crisis

Tua Tagovailoa emerges as a minimal-risk option for Vikings amid J.J. McCarthy uncertainty and Miami’s QB reset.

The Minnesota Vikings entered the offseason believing J.J. McCarthy was their future. Now, after injuries, inconsistency, and a 9–8 finish, the franchise is searching for stability under center. With the quarterback carousel already spinning, a surprising name has landed on their radar.

Tua Tagovailoa Projected To Steady the Vikings’ Uncertain Future

Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ $212.4 million quarterback, is quietly emerging as a “possible but not urgent” option for Minnesota.

Minnesota has made it clear it needs “a level of baseline quarterback play,” as executive vice president Rob Brzezinski said at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Vikings are exploring “every opportunity.” McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in 2024, has battled ankle, hand, and concussion issues. His development has stalled at a time when the NFC North is only getting stronger.

Tagovailoa’s situation in Miami adds intrigue.

The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $212.4 million extension after a breakout 2023 season in which he led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards. He threw 29 touchdowns, completed 69.3% of his passes, and became the first Dolphins quarterback since Dan Marino in 1992 to lead the league in yardage. That performance earned him Pro Bowl recognition and placed him among the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

However, 2025 told a different story. Tagovailoa threw for just 2,660 yards with 20 touchdowns and a career-high 15 interceptions as Miami slipped to 7–10. The production did not match the financial commitment. According to Spotrac, he carries a $99.2 million dead-cap figure, making a release complicated and a trade difficult.

League insiders believe a post-June 1 release could be Miami’s most realistic path, absorbing $67.4 million in dead money. If that happens, Tagovailoa would hit the market at a fraction of his current cap hit.

That’s where Minnesota fits.

There is built-in familiarity. As PFSN’s Austin Swaim points out, Frank Smith, Tagovailoa’s offensive coordinator in Miami from 2022 through 2025, recently joined the Vikings’ staff as assistant head coach. The Vikings also boast an elite trio of weapons in Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. In theory, it’s a system that could maximize Tagovailoa’s timing and accuracy.

Financially, Minnesota is tight, sitting more than $43 million over the cap. That makes a trade unlikely. But, as Swaim writes, if Tagovailoa were released, “There’s minimal risk in bringing in Tagovailoa as a potential free agent” compared to absorbing his full contract.

The Vikings are not closing doors. Aaron Rodgers, Kirk Cousins, Derek Carr, and Geno Smith are also being monitored. The plan, as head coach Kevin O’Connell said, is to use “the data that we have at this time.”

While Tagovailoa might not be the long-term solution, in a season where urgency is ramping up and patience is running thin, he could provide the competition McCarthy needs and the safety net that Minnesota can’t afford to overlook.
