The Minnesota Vikings are staring at a franchise crossroads. After missing the playoffs in 2025 and watching Sam Darnold win a Super Bowl elsewhere, questions at quarterback have only intensified.
Kyler Murray Emerges as Potential Kevin O’Connell Project
Multiple voices around the league have floated the idea that the Kyler Murray Vikings could target Murray if the Arizona Cardinals move on. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton suggested the Vikings could offer a third-round pick if it clears cap space. Others believe the more realistic path is a release.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Cardinals are “likely” to move on from Murray.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, speaking with Colin Cowherd, connected the Vikings and Jets to Murray as potential reclamation destinations. “When I look at Kyler, it would be a landing spot like that,” Breer said. “What complicates it is the contract.”
That contract is massive. Murray signed a five-year, $230.5 million extension. He is due $36.8 million guaranteed in 2026, and $19.5 million in 2027 becomes guaranteed if he remains on the roster past mid-March. Those figures make a trade difficult and could push Arizona toward a release.
If Murray hits the market, the Vikings could attempt a one-year, prove-it deal similar to Darnold’s 2024 contract. Kevin O’Connell has built a reputation for quarterback turnarounds. Darnold revived his career in the Vikings. Daniel Jones also credited the Vikings for helping relaunch his trajectory after a late-season stint.
ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum went further. “If I’m Kyler Murray, I am walking from Arizona to Minnesota,” Tannenbaum said. “Kevin is great with quarterbacks… You’re investing in your future.”
Murray would step into a favorable environment. Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson headline the passing attack. The Vikings also feature a strong run game. For a dual-threat quarterback who twice made the Pro Bowl, that supporting cast could be appealing.
There are risks. Murray played just five games last season. Durability questions linger. The Vikings already dealt with injuries at the position, with J.J. McCarthy missing significant time. Adding another quarterback with recent health concerns would require careful evaluation.
Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort said, “All options are on the table.” That leaves the door open. Minnesota executive Rob Brzezinski echoed a wide-net approach. “We’re exploring every option that could be out there,” he said.
The situation could escalate quickly. Arizona faces a looming contract deadline. If Murray is released, the Vikings might have a rare chance to pair a former No. 1 overall pick with O’Connell’s quarterback-friendly system.
