Carlos Alcaraz Makes His Feelings Clear on Jannik Sinner’s Surprising Loss to ‘Dangerous’ Rival in Doha

Carlos Alcaraz expressed surprise at Jannik Sinner’s early exit in Doha, while stressing the growing depth and unpredictability of the tour.

Carlos Alcaraz did not hide his reaction when asked about Jannik Sinner’s sudden departure from the 2026 Qatar Open. After advancing to the semifinals, the Spaniard acknowledged that he was caught off guard by Sinner’s quarterfinal loss.

Yet, in the same breath, he offered a measured perspective, emphasizing the depth of talent on tour and singling out Jakub Menšík as one of those dangerous young players capable of producing headline-making upsets on any given day.

Carlos Alcaraz Admits Surprise Over Jannik Sinner’s Quarterfinal Exit

Sinner arrived in Doha with significant momentum and the weight of expectation as the World No. 2. His campaign began with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Tomáš Macháč. He followed that performance with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Alexei Popyrin in the Round of 16.

However, his tournament took an unexpected turn in the quarterfinals on Feb. 19 against 20-year-old Mensik. After dropping the opening set in a tiebreak, Sinner responded strongly to claim the second set 6-2. The decider shifted quickly when Mensik secured an early break and held firm to close out a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 upset.

Speaking after his own semifinal win, Alcaraz addressed the result with candor. “I mean, I was surprised, I’m not gonna lie, I was surprised that Jannik lost,” he said in his post-match press conference. He quickly balanced that admission with context about the competitive landscape. “But at the same time I know what the players are capable of. There are really dangerous players when they’re having their day, Mensik for example.”

Alcaraz pointed to consistency as the distinguishing factor at the highest level. “The problem with them is consistency, playing at that level in every match. But when they’re inspired, they’re really dangerous. They can beat anyone, including me. I was surprised in a way, but at the same time, not that much.”

How Has Alcaraz Powered Through the 2026 Qatar Open?

In contrast to Sinner’s exit, Alcaraz dominated the 2026 Qatar Open, extending his season win streak to 11-0. Fresh off his Australian Open title, the World No. 1 opened with straight-set wins over Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Royer, though he had to survive a three-set scare in the quarterfinals against Karen Khachanov 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3.

In the semifinals, Alcaraz dethroned defending champion Andrey Rublev 7-6(3), 6-4. The Spaniard is now set to face France’s Arthur Fils in the final as he seeks his second title of the year.
