American teenager Learner Tien staged an impressive comeback against compatriot Frances Tiafoe to book his place in the Delray Beach Open semifinals. Tien later admitted he feared his run might end as he was nearing defeat, but revealed that seeing his mother in the stands provided the inspiration he needed to turn the match around.

The contest was fiercely contested from the outset, with neither player yielding ground. The opening set stretched into a tie-break, where the 20-year-old held his nerve to edge it 7-6(5). Tiafoe, however, responded with composure and experience, raising his level to claim the second set 6-3Â and force a decisive third.
The deciding set proved a stern test, particularly for Tien, who trailed 4–3 and sensed the momentum slipping away. Yet the 20-year-old responded with remarkable composure under pressure. He surged from that point to seal the set 7–5, closing out a hard-fought two-hour, 18-minute battle.
When asked how he clawed his way back, Tien admitted he did not feel at his best and acknowledged the situation looked bleak. Still, he said he trusted God’s plan and focused on competing. The 20-year-old added that spotting his mother in the stands gave him added resolve, realizing that a loss would mean her journey ended too.
“I have no idea. I mean, I got down nearly break, wasn’t looking too great. I prayed, I said god I got to trust your plan for this match. And just went out and competed. I saw my mom sitting up there when I was down 4-5. And I know if I lost, she was going to leave tomorrow,” he said during his post-match interview.

When asked whether that truly motivated him, he said, “Yeah, I was kind of thinking that early in the match, like 2-3 in the third maybe. But it kind of really hit home when it was 4-5 and I could see the end. I don’t know where she is,” he added.
The victory further underlined the momentum Tien has built at the start of the 2026 season. The world No. 23 has won seven of his last 10 hard-court matches, highlighted by an emphatic straight-sets triumph over world No. 11 Daniil Medvedev in January. Now it remains to be seen if he goes on to win his first title of the season in Delray Beach.
