Connor McDavid Backs Macklin Celebrini After Team Canada Opens Olympics With Strong Win
After the final whistle, the conversation turned toward a young rising star whose performance became an important talking point inside Canada’s lineup.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid entered the Milano Cortina Olympics as an alternate captain for Canada. This was his Olympic debut, and he centered the top line with rookie Macklin Celebrini and veteran Tom Wilson.
Canada had control from the first period during the opening game against Czechia. The lineup blended experienced leaders with young players, but their puck passing was on par with players playing together for years. That coordination yielded results beyond expectations.
Canada earned a 5-0 win in the first Group A matchup. McDavid led the attack with quick passes and smart positioning in the offensive zone. He provided three crucial assists and also delivered an early hit that set a physical tone for the team.
Veteran forwards Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon helped control puck movement through the neutral zone. Canada kept pressure on Czechia and limited scoring chances throughout the game.
Celebrini scored Canada’s first goal late in the opening period after a strong net-front play. After the game, McDavid praised his young teammate during an interview with reporter Mollie Walker.
McDavid said, “I can’t say enough good things about that kid. He’s so, so impressive. At 19 years old, he’s a great, young player, but not just because he’s so good with the puck, but just all the little things he does, the hard work he puts into the game. He’s good along the wall, wins battles, and plays just a hard game. An impressive kid.”

Celebrini entered the Olympics after a strong start to the 2025-26 season with the San Jose Sharks. He is ranked fourth in points with 81 and has scored 28 goals, thus becoming the backbone of a young rebuilding team. He debuted at the Olympics at age 19Â and has shown how impressive he truly is.
However, Canada won with a complete effort from everyone on the team. Goaltender Jordan Binnington made 26 saves to secure the shutout in the opener. And stars like Mark Stone, Bo Horvat, MacKinnon, and Nick Suzuki scored insurance goals.
Two time Olympics gold winning captain, Crosby, had two assists in the win. Under his leadership, the team delivered exactly what the fans needed.

Canada now prepares for its next Group A game against Switzerland.
