Former Cowboys All-Pro Holds Trevon Diggs Responsible for Ugly Exit From Dallas: ‘He Wasn’t in a Good Place’

The saga between the Cowboys and Trevon Diggs concluded in a messy divorce, and a former Dallas All-Pro cornerback says Diggs is at fault.

The divorce between the Dallas Cowboys and former All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs was unceremonious to say the least.

Matters had been trending in the wrong direction between both parties for quite some time, but after Diggs stayed behind in his hometown of Washington following the Cowboys’ Christmas Day win over the Commanders despite being told not to, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Diggs went through the proper channels for permission, but the club denied his request, and he didn’t listen.

Trevon Diggs, Cowboys Separation Went Beyond On-Field Struggles

At one point, it appeared that Diggs was going to become the next big thing at cornerback. He logged 11 interceptions in 2021, tying three-time All-Pro Everson Walls for the highest single-season number in franchise history. Diggs also registered a career-high 21 defended passes across the 16 games he played that season. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there.

Over the next four seasons, leading up to his release from the Cowboys, Diggs managed just six interceptions and played in 49 of a possible 68 games while navigating various injuries. But it wasn’t just his performance on the field that was expediting his eventual release.

Walls, who played nine seasons for the Cowboys and helped win a Super Bowl, told DallasNews.com that Diggs never fully bought into the team’s culture.

“There are some relationships that you think you can handle more than you thought. There are some relationships that are up and down,” Walls said. “I’m sure Trevon thought that this was going to work out, but you’ve got to do your part. There are rumors that he wasn’t doing that, and I’m not talking about on the field, necessarily. I’m talking about buying into the culture of the team.”

After the Cowboys released Diggs, he was claimed by the Green Bay Packers ahead of their regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

“I went back and looked at some of his highlights. Just amazing some of the plays that he made, not just the interceptions,” Walls said. “But it’s where you are when things go south, and he wasn’t in a good place when he did that.”

While the Packers rested the majority of their starters against the Vikings since they couldn’t improve or worsen their seeding in the playoffs, Diggs had the opportunity to play 33 defensive snaps in his debut. He finished with a pair of tackles. He also managed to get on the field for one defensive play in their Wild Card loss to the Chicago Bears.

Up to that point, Diggs had been a shell of himself in 2025. He spent time on injured reserve with a knee injury, but in the eight games he did play before joining the Packers, he posted a perfect opposing passer rating of 158.3.

He doesn’t have an interception or a single pass breakup. A change of scenery or a different scheme could’ve helped rejuvenate his career, but that didn’t appear to be the case, and it cost the Packers virtually nothing to find out.

All of the guaranteed money in the five-year, $97 million extension Diggs signed with the Cowboys in the summer of 2023 had already been paid to him. Any team claiming him off waivers would only have to inherit his $472,000 base salary for Week 18, in addition to $58,823 if he was active for the game, which he was.

With or without Diggs, the Cowboys’ defense needs reinforcements across the board. They ranked dead-last out of 32 teams in PFSN’s Defense Impact score.
