NBA All-Star Weekend offers a big opportunity for the league’s top stars to connect with each other and fans, watching their favorite players together.
However, the league has been making tweaks on and off the court to enhance the experience of the festivities. One of those adjustments caught heavy criticism from the overall fanbase.
Fans Aren’t Happy With the NBA’s Latest Decision for the All-Star Weekend
The 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend is taking place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. Being in the most populous state in the country, it is also close to Los Angeles. As a result, many celebrities and influencers would be in attendance, in addition to the league’s star players.
The NBA decided to get ahead on the influencer aspect, per Variety. They revealed that they will have over 200 social media influencers at the arena to cover events throughout the weekend.
Many online weren’t approving of the decision, especially from those with media experience.
Westwood One Sports producer Karlos Ortiz commented, “I used to love the NBA…bullshit like this is why I can’t remember the last time I locked into the ASG, let alone a regular season game. The NBA is cooked.”
“There are so many legit media that didn’t get approved to cover All Star because of bs like this,” The Daily Sun’s senior sports reporter, Jammel Cutler, remarked.
Senior writer for The Athletic, James L. Edwards III, posted: “While at the NBA Cup, we (media) were trying to do a player interview for our jobs and one content creator interrupted, pulled out a Knicks player’s jersey out of his pocket and asked him to sign it. He got the last question.”
“There are actual sports coverage outlets being denied credentials for this. Ensh***ification continues. (Not me, I hate All-Star and have no travel budget and am not a huge fan of LA. Quite happy to be home.),” NBA writer and podcast host Matt Moore commented, being blunt with his thoughts on the latest news.
The All-Star Weekend has received criticism in past years for the decline in product quality. It often involves the structure of the events or whether the players are putting effort into the games they are playing.
Nonetheless, the league will continue to work to elevate the standard of the festivities. Many of their star players will be present for the event, something that many fans will look forward to.
This year’s All-Star Weekend will commence on Feb. 13 with the Celebrity Game (7 p.m. ET) and the Rising Stars Tournament (9 p.m. ET).
Feb. 14 will feature the 3-point and dunk contests throughout Valentine’s Day. Last but not least, the newly formatted All-Star Game will conclude the festivities on Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. ET.
