The noise around the Toronto Maple Leafs’ blue line is getting louder as the season approaches Olympic break. While the results have stabilised over the last three games, their earlier situation painted a completely different picture, with the Leafs losing eight of their nine games.
So, considering the room for improvement, the Leafs’ front office appears open to bold ideas. One of those ideas connects directly to Tampa Bay, and it raises questions that stretch beyond a single move.
Nick Kypreos Links Maple Leafs to Tampa Bay D-man
The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled early this season, and their talent is clear, but balance remains an issue. Toronto scores enough to stay in control each game, yet defensive lapses keep dragging the team back into trouble. That gap is why trade chatter has shifted toward reshaping the blue line rather than just patching it.
One name drawing interest is Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Speaking on Real Kyper & Bourne, NHL insider Nick Kypreos talked about moving defenseman Morgan Rielly and signing Raddysh.
“What will happen is that you move Morgan (Rielly) out and you go sign Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning,” Kypreos said. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s already done.. Toronto boy, he’s got a bomb of a shot which you haven’t had in years.”
Raddysh is having a breakout 2025–26 campaign, showing growth in all areas. He has scored 17 goals and 34 assists for 51 points in 48 games. His +16 rating reflects strong two-way play, and he averages over 22 minutes per night.
Those numbers matter for a Toronto team lacking blue-line offense outside its top options. Raddysh’s right shot and willingness to fire from the point stand out. Toronto’s power play has struggled, and a defenseman with 17 goals could change looks quickly. His production has not come at the cost of defensive reliability.
The rumor also circles back to Rielly, a fixture in Toronto for more than a decade. Drafted fifth overall in 2012, Rielly has played 13 seasons with the Leafs. His best year came in 2018-19, when he posted 72 points, the high point of his offensive impact.
In the current season, Rielly has 7 goals and 24 assists for 31 points in 54 games. He continues to log over 21 minutes, and his role remains important. However, the Leafs still struggle to limit chances against, which has fueled talk about a change on the blue line.

Raddysh also fits Toronto’s timeline, because at 29, he is in his prime and on a cheap 2-year, $1,950,000 contract that expires after the season. Tampa Bay must weigh value versus future cost, and Toronto must decide if a bold swap can change its identity.
This rumor is less about one defenseman and more about the Leafs’ direction. Toronto has tried patience over the years, and now, it might be beneficial to opt for little disruption.
