Pittsburgh vs. Virginia Prediction and Preview

The transformation in Charlottesville has been nothing short of stunning. Virginia averages 84.0 points per game in its first season under Odom, compared to 64.8 last season under interim coach Ron Sanchez and 62.9 in Tony Bennett’s final season. The up-tempo style is a complete departure from Bennett’s famed pack-line defense, and it’s working.

Belgian freshman Thijs De Ridder has been the catalyst, averaging 24.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in road wins at Notre Dame and Boston College. He leads UVA in scoring at 17 points per game, and his recent performances have been spectacular, including a career-high 32 points as No. 17 Virginia rallied for a 100-97 double-overtime win over the Fighting Irish.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s struggles have been alarming. No. 22 Clemson used a big first-half run to take control on the way to its 15th straight win over the Panthers, 63-52, on Saturday. Before that, Louisville routed Pittsburgh 100-59, one of the more lopsided losses in recent program history.

That said, Jeff Capel’s group has been solid on the defensive glass thus far this season. As a team, Pittsburgh is in the top ten in the nation in offensive rebounds allowed, as opponents come down with only 7.1 offensive rebounds per game.

Virginia has relied on its ability to rebound from its misses during their struggles in the past two outings, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds against both Notre Dame and Boston College.

If Pitt is able to limit the Cavaliers’ success on this front, it will take a much better shooting night from Virginia to win this one comfortably. The Cavaliers have had slow starts lately. Virginia trailed at halftime in both wins last week. If Pitt can jump on the Hoos early, they could make things interesting.

Still, the talent gap is simply too wide for anything other than a Cavaliers win. The Panthers lack the offensive firepower to keep pace with Virginia’s high-powered attack, and their three-point shooting woes make it nearly impossible to overcome deficits.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 62, Virginia 79
