NHL Trade Rumors: Washington Capitals Have Short-Term Plan For Alex Ovechkin’s Looming Retirement

Capitals push for playoffs while quietly planning for life after Ovechkin, with trade buzz growing around a replacement as his future remains uncertain.

Alex Ovechkin’s future is once again a hot topic around the league, and the Capitals are quietly bracing for whatever comes next. Washington is firmly in the playoff mix, sitting fourth in the Metropolitan Division and riding a three-game winning streak.

As they chase another postseason run, the Capitals are also beginning to plan for what life after Ovechkin could eventually look like.

Capitals’ Post-Alex Ovechkin Plan Revealed

Ovechkin has not yet committed to playing beyond this season. The 40-year-old is in the final year of his five-year, $47.5 million contract. And while retirement remains a possibility, his play suggests he still has plenty left in the tank.

This season, Ovechkin has posted 47 points (22 goals, 25 assists) in 57 games. He recently hit the 20-goal mark for the 21st time in his career. Passing Ron Francis for the second-most 20-goal seasons in NHL history. And moving within one of Gordie Howe’s all-time records.

Before the season began, Ovechkin made it clear he wasn’t rushing any decisions. “I’m just going to enjoy it. I’m going to enjoy the season, and we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Ovechkin said. Still, amid uncertainty, the Capitals are quietly preparing for what comes next.

According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos, Washington may already have a short-term contingency plan in place, involving New York’ forward Artemi Panarin. “Washington is all over him. There’s a sense he could be a good replacement for Alexander Ovechkin if Ovechkin does in fact decide to shut down his brilliant career after this season,” Kypreos said.

He also noted that Washington is among the few teams prepared to satisfy Panarin’s hefty contract demands, which are expected to land somewhere between $40 and $50 million on an extension. “But will Panarin want to go there?” Kypreos questioned.

Panarin is in the final year of his seven-year, $81.5 million deal. He holds a full no-movement clause, giving him complete control over his future. New York has reportedly been working with Panarin and his agent to explore preferred landing spots.

Panarin is still one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players, and his presence could elevate Washington even further, especially if this season turns out to be Ovechkin’s final ride. Bringing in a star of his caliber would give the Capitals a real chance at one more deep playoff push while properly sending off their franchise legend.

For now, Panarin has reportedly been scratched from New York’s lineup as trade talks continue, and Washington waits to see how the situation unfolds.

Washington will next turn its attention to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, with playoff positioning and long-term planning happening simultaneously.
