Troy Stecher, claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers in Nov. 2025, played a major role in Toronto’s 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday. With Morgan Rielly sidelined, Stecher logged more than 20 minutes of ice time, led the team with four shots, and scored the game-winning goal in the second period.
Goaltender Joseph Woll praised Stecher’s impact in a post-game media conference with Sportsnet’s Luke Fox, saying, “Thank God Edmonton let him go.”
Stecher, 31, also reflected on his career and the teams he has played for, saying, “I loved being a Canuck. I loved being a Flame. I loved being an Oiler. And now I love being a Maple Leaf, and that’s where my pride and joy lies. But I’m not oblivious to the memories I have in the past. Very fortunate for those.”
Stecher’s experience has helped him settle quickly with the Leafs and contribute right away.
So far this season, Stecher has played 43 games, recording three goals and eight assists for 11 points, with a +7 rating. He averages over 19 minutes of ice time per game and provides reliable play at even strength and on special teams.
Stecher has also been used on the penalty kill, helping Toronto limit opponent power-play chances while maintaining defensive structure.
His game-winning goal against Calgary once again showed that he can make an impact in important moments. Toronto has now won two games on its Western Canada trip with him in the lineup.
