Bill Belichick was first eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame during the 2026 NFL offseason. The legendary coach was shockingly snubbed from being a first-ballot inductee when he didn’t get enough votes this year.
He won six Super Bowl rings as the head coach of the New England Patriots, but one of his players, who was there for three of them, wants everyone to stop focusing on the snub.
Former Patriots Player Responds to Bill Belichick’s Shocking Hall of Fame Snub
Belichick won his first two Super Bowl rings as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants before winning six more of them during his legendary run with the Patriots. He was the head coach throughout their two-decade dynasty of dominance with iconic quarterback Tom Brady.
The coaching legend is at or near the top of just about every possible category in the record books and is considered by many around the NFL to be the greatest of all time. All of this apparently wasn’t enough to make him a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and while this has been the main topic about this year’s class, former Patriot Matt Light doesn’t think it deserves all the attention.
“Eventually he’s going to be there … All of the people that are going to be recognized for this unbelievable honor, those are the people we should be talking about … These are the individuals that have had the biggest impact on the game of football, individually … I want to spend time talking about all of the rest of these amazing finalists,” explained Light.
Light took an interesting approach to Belichick’s snub. The former Patriots offensive lineman urged everyone around the NFL to stop talking about that angle and focus more on those who actually got voted in. He specifically mentioned Drew Brees, one of his college teammates, who turned in one of the best quarterback careers of all time during his impressive run with the New Orleans Saints.
Brees amazingly finished among the top ten quarterbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings in all 15 of his seasons with the Saints. He also set many of the all-time passing records before being surpassed by Brady. Few would argue against Brees being deserving of a first-ballot induction, which is apparently something Belichick didn’t earn. He ranks second all-time in total wins (regular season plus playoffs), behind only Don Shula, and also has the most playoff wins ever.
